So far I have no serious issues with Vista, except for the hideous new GUI that hides everything you need.
I’ve not used it for very long yet, though.
I always assume that Microsoft would keep routes to settings of an OS.
So someone asks me to do something on their pc. I am like “yeah no problem, we just go to control panel and… wait, where is everything ?”
everytime i use it, i cannot even find anything. besides the fact that the explorer and start menu is just designed in a silly way

Microsoft’s time is up. They are slowly losing console wars, and fast the OS market.
Remember it doesnt matter that most people today still use some kind of Windows, fact is, nobody buys it anymore. there are traditional systems which have windows and are never changed, or pirated version are used.
I know only a single person who would ever pay for an OS.
Well personally I wouldn’t buy a OS on its own (come with the computer).
But I would never ever install anything else then windows.
Windows 7 is working lovely here, haven’t heard anyone having any problems with it, so it should restore faith from Vista. Thought Vista SP2 is out now, I don’t think there’s much trouble with it these days.

Microsoft isn’t good at making software that works well. They’re just good at selling the crap they do make.
I’m running Windows 7 now. It’s a bit better than Vista… but let me illustrate some of the brain-dead things that MS did - just in the installer alone.
- Installer starts loading from bootable DVD… after a bit it says “Starting Windows”
- Machine hangs with virtually no disk activity or feedback of any sort on a screen with nothing but a background graphic and a pointer. It sits like this for several minutes - no sign of loading anything and no message on the screen at all.
3.Installer UI appears… similar hang to #2, but not for as long. Then I’m offered the choice to “Upgrade my existing Windows install” or “Custom install” - Pick “Upgrade”… installer then tells you “You can’t upgrade from the installer you idiot! You have to reboot and run the install from inside your existing Windows installation” - MS installer folks = morons.
- Reboot after all that useless waiting…
- Boot in to windows XP 32-bit.
- Run Windows 7 (64-bit) installer
- Install program tells you, “You idiot, you can’t upgrade from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Windows 7. You have to boot from the install CD and select custom install to do a new fresh install.” - MS installer folks = morons.
They blood go through the effort of detecting a previous install and showing you an “Upgrade” button, only to say AFTER you press it that the upgrade button doesn’t and you have to reboot. But the morons don’t bother to do the trivial check to see if the existing OS was 64-bit or not, so they simply trick you into wasting more time.
And I’m supposed to trust these idiots with making an operating system that doesn’t suck? Trust me the suckage you don’t notice is probably still there under the hood. MS is full of that kind of thing - like still requiring 8.3 file names in .msi installers even though .msi installers can’t run on any platform that doesn’t support “long” file names.
Other suckage: drive letters. And an A: drive that shows up even when it is not physically present. Of course there is the Vista fiasco of UAC… which silently breaks tons of stuff, like Google Chrome, and drag and drop of files to notepad. Face it - MS sucks at what they do. If it weren’t for lack of support from 3rd parties for hardware and software nearly every other (non-MS) OS would be preferred.
That said… I think Windows 7 sucks less. It’s too bad they have such a monopoly… I’d much rather run OpenSolaris - if only it was supported better. Hals the reason I use and code in Java is so I’m not tied to Windows… I don’t care about "run anywhere"so much as I care about “run anywhere else” 
If it weren’t for the Windows monopoly I would guess computing would be ten years ahead fo where it’s at… MS was ten years late on making a decent graphical OS… ten years late on multitasking… STILL is sitting in the stone age on things like 8.3 file names and drive letters… and everything they do just copies more from the Mac but with enough of a twist to make it not as good. (See the new start bar in Windows 7 which mimics the Mac “dock”)
Can’t say I’ve tried OpenSolaris so can’t really comment there. But that’s looks like its more for servers.
I did do a upgrade didn’t have any problems what you said. But its a RC so you can report those problems. I believe I read they were improving this for the final version anyway.

Rumour has is that Dell are trialling Android running on their netbooks. The reason they give is it more responsive and gives better battery life then other o/s.

As far as I can see the xbox 360 is a huge hit and won over Sony’s PS3 in quite a convincing way.
Seeing that Nintendo just seemed to have hit a different audience, you could argue that Microsoft has won the console wars in some ways.
The ones who have clearly lost this round are Sony.
FWIW I think Microsoft is not as evil anymore as they used to be (I think we’d be in a much worse position if for example Apple would take MS’ place).
Their OS-es (while not being the most user friendly) have actually become quite stable over the years and MS do innovate these days.
Not that I particularly like microsoft though ;), but I think we shouldn’t become stuck in a stubborn ‘M$ = evil & sucks’ mindset.
no. the 360 was released about 2 years earlier, unfinishied of course like any MS product (ring of death etc). and of course because of this and the complicated development on ps3, the 360 had a better acceleration but now the ps3 wins since 2008, because it was designed for a long run
in my opinion nintendo and wii do not participate in console wars, their console is different and outsells both system by far
the 3 big regions of gaming are US, Japan and Europe of course.
the 360 sells in japan are almost zero ever since
and in europe it will take at most one year and ps3 passed 360
in germany, already, more people own and buy ps3 than 360’s
And I dont have to talk about the PS2, still sells enormously. And of course still games come out for it.

I personally selld my 360 and bought a PS3 1 month ago. And i enjoy 1080p, network play which is free, MGS4, Infamous and Valkyria Chronicles.
Thats actually my ps3 library right now =P
bottom line in every direction(OS, gaming, other software, etc) its the same with MS: they might be still in lead, but only because they where in lead this long, and it gradually ends now
Umm, check your own sources (vgchartz, fwiw).
In Japan the 360 sells almost as much as the PS3 these days. Or should I say as little? (PS3 is not doing that well in japan too)
In Europe, 360 has a 2 million lead and still outsells PS3.
In the biggest market, the US, the 360 outsells the PS3 even more.
So I can’t see how you can argue that PS3 is winning this.
Now MS has made mistakes (like the RROD), but so did Sony (releasing a compromised design that’s painful to develop on with much fanfare as having supercomputer performance while at the same time being consistently outperformed by the cheaper XBox)
While not being the cancer curing powerhouse Sony tauted it to be, I do love my PS3 though. Some truly great games there, and it’s a nice versatile, reliable and quiet machine.
But it is being outsold and outperformed by the 360.

PS3 might do a bit better in japan (well, let’s say ‘less badly’), but if you’re looking at worldwide sales I don’t see PS3 catching the 360’s life time sales, ever.
Not to say PS3 is a failure, but it’s kind of embarassing seeing Sony going from massively dominating the market to having to accept last place.

you see it everywhere: why do you create something? to earn money or to have create something great, you know, doing it with passion and ambition, where money is only a necessary side effect.
MS just releases crappy soft- and hardware, also at an unfinished state only to earn more money
I mean look at all the braindead ego shooters on 360 (shoot, shoot, shoot, reload and shoot some more. and every game is the same)
and of course you can see it in the movie industry too right ? Mostly uninspired, badly written, REMAKES and bad sequels
and this is definitely why MS has to die and will die.

I think that’s a bit too easy.
Sony’s bottomline too is money. Remember Sony was also not a pioneer in the industry in any way when they entered.
And while Nintendo was inventive with the controllers, the Wii basically became the preferred console for non-gamers, just putting out shovelware for soccermoms and recycling old gamecube games. To me, Nintendo is the most money grabbing corporate in the industry at the moment.
Microsoft now made the best performing console with the most great games, and have some innovation in the pipeline as well (Natal). Do you honestly believe everybody who’s working at MS are money hungry monsters lusting for world dominance? Don’t you think there are probably enough people there that are truly in the business because they simply love being part of it?
And braindead originality-free ego shooters are everywhere. It’s not typically a 360 thing. I mean look at Killzone 2 on PS3 for example, that can’t be called original.

by doing games design and creating games, my ambition is to tell a story, to make people think and laugh, to transfer emotions in an interactive way.
this is why my favourite franchises are final fantasy and MGS.
its not just a game… you care about those characters

Like I mean with linux all thee people around the globe are working together to make a great product more usable and efficient.
and with MS its all about sales, this is why it sucks, because the only way to do anything successful in life you have to do it because you really want to, not to get paid

an OS is about kernel and how it works, not about silly programs you can aswell download on win xp or something
it is made to look good to the outside, but it really isnt. its a disguise
like the xbox, till the day you spend hundres of $ on xbox live which should be free, and eventually seeing the RROD (which I btw say 2 fucking weeks after I bought it)
I’d almost say it’s more targeted at desktop environment adleast that is where most momentum seems to be.
Time slider is kinda cool and might well be a killer feature for ‘the spouse’.
Microsoft is great, I love their mouses and keyboards.
Can you name a Microsoft innovation that they didn’t acquire from some other company (and subsequently ruin), or blatantly copy from Apple? Or “invent” simply as a reaction to the real innovator (E.g. C# based on Java)
Or given that they came up with it on their own - that it doesn’t suck? (E.g. removing/hiding the menu bar and when they do show it, placing it under the tool bar in recent IE and Office apps)
Remember Windows 95? Ten years AFTER Amiga had a graphical OS with true (non-cooperative) multitasking.
I can’t think of anything that compares to something like Sun’s ZFS for example.
I lived though the early days of DOS… and saw much better and more advanced platforms die out (Atari ST, Amiga, BeBox, BeOS) basically because of the Wintel monopoly. I credit IBM with Microsofts success… the IBM salesforce was powerful and they sold what they knew was inferior crap to hand Microsoft it’s monopoly. It effectively poisoned the computer industry for a decade at least. I’m holding that grudge for a REALLY long time
