Write up on designing 3D Levels

Hi - I recently blogged about the process I go through for creating levels for my game. It’s not so much about the technical details as it is about design and process.

3D Level Construction in 6 Steps

nice article, we are waiting for new ones…

Thanks - I’ll be adding more “nibble’s and bits” to my blog every so often. I’ll make no promises on them being regularly scheduled though

i guess u forgot step 0 :stuck_out_tongue:
learn to master a 3d modelling program which is t he hardest part if you ask me

the only 3d modeling program where I wasn’t pulling my hair out because of frustration after 10 mins of using it, was autodesk inventor. And there is little that you can do with autodesk inventor (computer)gaming wise. :-X

blender is not that hard to learn, but you do need to use tutorials, at least i did. wings3d is ok but nothing compared to blender, is it possible to make non-enclosed shapes in wings3d?, it doesnt seem like it.

I’ve played with the Maya Personal Learning Edition, and it seems pretty damn nice - much easier to use than Blender, more intuitive. Unfortunately I haven’t dabbled much with it as you can’t export anything from the personal learning edition, so it’s not like I could do anything useful if I did…

is it possible to make non-enclosed shapes in wings3d?

Use the hole material. Those parts with that material wont get exported at all.

That is a fantastic write up. I’m focusing on learning to create 2D games but with the intention on moving into 3d play areas later. Your write up lays out some of the steps in a way that is clear and helpful to those with no experience to fall back on.

Impressive results too!

Thanks! Glad you found it useful. I wrote it for people such as yourself who want to work in 3D but have no idea what’s involved in it or what kind of issues to expect.
