I thought it might be fun to talk about what keyboard we code on.
Right now I’m using a old Dell RT7D20 (With plenty of crumbs and dust in between the keys!), although I’m considering getting a mechanical one, maybe the CM Storm QuickFire XT or the Rosewill Helios (With blue switches).
Just a $20 Logitech K120 here. Never really put much thought into the keyboard I use, as long as it works I’m generally happy. Coffee cup killed my last K120, worked perfectly through gaming abuse until then.
Mostly on my notebook’s integrated keyboard, even if and when I have an external keyboard around.
So far none of the few external ones I tried came close to the haptic and audible feedback of that Lenovo’s integrated keyboard.
Logitech K260 that came with the computer. It’s lasted me a good 3 years with extensive typing every day.
I did have a Corsair K70 Vengeance with brown switches for about a week. It was definitely a superior typing experience, but I couldn’t justify the cost
On my laptop, I really like the integrated keyboard that came with my Lenova G400s, which I’ve been using since last 2 years.
On my desktop, I use the logitech keyboard (dunno the model) which I bought in 2004. Was still using it and it is working good enough still. (Only exception is the power key, which stopped working 2 years ago. I don’t use it anymore so it is perfectly fine.)
I’m building a new desktop soon and want to find a mechanical keyboard, anyone have a recommendation for under… $75 maybe? I don’t have too much money, but I’m on the hunt for a nice keyboard that will last me until I get can my paws on one of those sweet couple hundred dollar ones!
You should really just save up and spend $100 to $120 on a mechanical keyboard, unless you get a Unicomp keyboard, which is a bit cheaper than the cherry switch keyboards. You can spend $30-$50 more than $75 on a cherry keyboard and get one that will outlast your children, or you can find a keyboard for around $75 that would pretty much be a cheap piece of crap.
If you’re into small, the Poker 3 is around $130, or the Ducky Mini is around $120, or the KB Paradise is around $110.
On the bigger side there’s the Cooler Master Quickfire at $110 or so, but most of the other boards are $150 or so. You could look into the brands Ducky, Filco, Leopold, Varmilo. Razer makes keyboards as well but they use knock-off non-cherry switches. Some companies use Topre switches like HHKB, which are typically more expensive. Some use ALPS, like Matias.
Damn, thanks Elsealabs! Really helpful information there. I’ll probably pick up a cheap, “regular” keyboard for the time being and then in a couple weeks spring for a good mechanical keyboard. I have a lot of research to do to figure out what kind I want in the meantime.

I use a K70 with cherry MX red switches. It’s a great keyboard. Feels good, looks good, easy to clean. I didn’t get the RGB model because multicolour backlighting struck me as a silly frill.
