SMF is falling apart.

Please report any malfunction in this thread, so we have a central place to report oddities and plain breakage.

Just a few minutes ago I logged out, just to check whether everything was still working, and found out the registration captcha was broken. People must have only been able to register accounts through the Google/Facebook ‘fallback’ services I added quite some time ago.

Backlog:

  • when replying, ‘insert quote’ does not seem to work anymore
  • register-captcha is broken
  • some people do not get their account-activation/password-reset/email-change-confirmation emails, bricking their accounts
  • wiki has some issues with https images
  • submitting incorrect password causes “Username” message
  • (non SMF) irc-logger needs a restart

Please notify me of anything I missed.

I will try to find some time to work my way through the backlog in weekends, have patience. :point:

The IRC log has been missing in action for a number of days now.

Noted, but that it not really SMF, I just have to restart some process / figure out why the logger did not reconnect.

If you login and mess up your password, it says “Username” in the default font at the top of the page. Nothing else.

Clicking read more, when you press the “You have recevied n medals”

gives

Ooh, found another one. If you click “Appreciation++” in a PM, it gives you this

Nothing else.

the RSS feed has also been down for a while.

maybe it’s just me but …

the post-preview works when using the quick reply - once, then it’s stuck at showing Fetching preview…

Editing a post in-place by hitting that paper and pencil icon on the right side freezes at the green bar with “Loading…” on top.

Riven, have you ever strongly considered open sourcing (parts of) the forum?
There’s a small legion of committed and capable programmers on this site, and you’ve only got so much time to work on it yourself.

You don’t have to do it all yourself.

We should have a sub-forum for reporting bugs, then fix them one by one. Open sourcing the forum will just add complications… Maybe a private repo where you log in with your JGO account, but not open.

What browser are you using? I’ve found it never works at all in Firefox, but seems OK in Chrome.

Another option is to switch over to Discourse. It’s an open-source forum software developed (“for the next 10 years of the internet”) by some of the same people who created Stack Overflow. I really like it, and it’s very actively developed.

They include methods for importing existing forums into a Discourse site. That would probably be a lot of work up front, but then you could sit back and enjoy new features as they roll them out.

I would guess that Riven won’t feel like going this route, but it’s an option.

But I like the medals system, and the outdated feel to the forum is charming :’(
Also, if you upgrade the forum, you’ll probably loose allot of the classic posts (Minecraft, WIDT, Game Jams being some of them…)

I don’t have a horse in this race, and I’m not really arguing for anything in particular. Just pointing out the option.

But Discourse already has a built-in medal system (which would replace our social rankings), for which you can add custom queries (so we wouldn’t lose our social rankings). You can also like posts, which is pretty much what our medal system is (so we wouldn’t lose the medals). (And some simple css could probably change the heart to a medal if people really hate the “like” system.)

And those classic posts would be saved if the forum was imported into Discourse.

Like I said, I don’t really have a horse in this race. And maybe this thread isn’t really the place to talk about Discourse (chit chat monster, here we come!). Just mentioning an option.

oh dear. i use FF 42.0

it did work in the past, maybe just on an older fox version.

Logging in, checking “unread posts since last visit” and logging out will mark ALL as read. Have to open them all before logging out unless I have time for crawling.

That’s why I use “unread posts since epoch” :point:

That’s the whole point of Unread Posts Since Last Visit. Check out the Since Epoch option… but don’t be alarmed at how many pages behind you’ll be! ;D

Another issue: all JGO emails have been going straight to spam for me (using gmail). The reason: “It is in violation of Google’s recommended email sender guidelines.” This is the accompanying link: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/81126?hl=en#authentication

Interesting. I have noticed I haven’t been getting the updated thread e-mails, but having really thought about it…also on gmail.
