SMF is falling apart.

That’s strange though! When I joined, it wouldn’t wipe the extra unread posts…because they were still unread. I guess it is more true to its name now. Thank you for pointing out the epoch option - I’ll be going with that!

SMF’s unread posts (whether it’s since last visit, since epoch, or new replies) is known to occasionally break for certain accounts. Normally clicking the [MARK ALL MESSAGES AS READ] button will make it work correctly again, at the cost of… valuable history about what you have yet to read, obviously.

This is a lot of damage to our beloved forum in my opinion. Couldn’t we just upgrade SMF to a newer version?

P.S. I’d like to mention, that I’m still doing backups of JGO on my site: http://goharsha.com/jgo_recovery/

SMF2 is not structurally better. It’s from the same monkeys after all. We’d also lose all customizations and a shitload of bugfixes I applied throughout the years.

Admittedly, some mods/fixes trip up SMF, but the scale at which SMF is falling apart when I’m not touching it is worrying.

The “registration” bug has been around for a really long time (it got me, so I would just lurk instead) until I (more recently) made an account via my gmail account.

Another issue I’ve found (and I have no idea if it’s intentional or not), is that old posts are unavailable, for example: http://www.java-gaming.org/forums/index.php?topic=13211.30 which just returns “hello world”

Any link to JGO starting with /forums/ is from the era (about 10 years ago) that JGO was not under my control AND another forum backend was used. It is unlikely the Topic IDs even match up with the SMF backend. Thank you for reporting though, I will make the ‘hello world’ page redirect to the homepage.

Also – when trying to send a PM, the “send PM captcha” doesn’t load, and the “listen to the letters” doesn’t work. All I see is the “broken image” image, and the audio stream is empty

EDIT: apparently the PM still went through, however - it doesn’t show up in my outbox.

EDIT2: when the other person responded, it then showed up. weird.

CodeMason:
PMs don’t show up in your outbox unless you check off the box for that.

I’ve never had a PM-captcha, let alone a broken one :point:

Good to know though, I will look into it.

Riven : If you need a guppie to test it, let me know I’m your Huckleberry.

Preview post also isn’t working, it just sits on “Fetching preview…”

Works for me. Which browser are you using?

Well, can’t answer for @CodeMason, but @basil_ and I have both mentioned this earlier in this thread as an issue on Firefox. Hope that helps. Happy to test anything / attempt debug if necessary.

It doesn’t work on Firefox 42 (on linux, if that helps).

On Chrome 46.0.2490.86 (64-bit, also linux), it works just fine.

Fonts too small on mobile. It’s why I don’t visit much anymore. Scrolling back and forth every sentence is too tedious.

I just bought a bigger phone:

Heh, my phone is already a Samsung Note 2. 720 x 1280 isn’t terribly unreasonable. I don’t think a higher resolution would fix it, the text would still be tiny and zooming in so I could read would still mean panning left and right for every sentence.

I see there are <meta name=“viewport-test” …> tags in the HTML, so Riven has probably already tried that out. There is probably something that could be done without dorking around too much in SMF-land.

While my post was a joke, the higher resolution does help. I only zoom and scroll left and right on the topic list now. Reading threads is well manageable in 1080.

But me too would appreciate a bigger font on mobile.

I have come to the conclusion that SMF is a lost cause. :point:

Even when I’d continue fixing the bugs, it would mean I’d invest even more in a forum that is showing its age (apart from having a crappy PHP backend). The generated HTML more or less rules out any modern look.

I am exploring the options, and once I have anything to show, I will share it with you as early as possible. I will also open source the backend as a github repository. We’ll see what a bit of cooperation can do for JGO!
