RTS idea

i have this game concept idea about some 10 years
never seriously planned to release it by myself cause of need of many money and big team
so the idea:
ordinary RTS (for example like StarCraft) but for each single unit or sometimes a group of units plays a separate player
i actually dreamed about such a game for my own joy playing it

That’s a pretty cool idea! Would you want it to be 2D or 3D?

seems surely 3d in nowadays
but personally i played not WarCraft III any seriously and StarCraft II mostly because of graphics
i like prerendered StarCraft (I) grahpics
when i just dreamed to make this game by myself in Flash without real care about realization i would make it (at least 1st version) brutally 2d
totally top-down view with rotation of vector graphic units
if someone is interested about this idea for 10 years i have collected some pretty cool ideas about details
for example mechanics of a controlling a single unit and tricks
believe me mini fights would become much more viewtiful and interesting
actually this main RTS idea is a bit but somehow with many additional rules and without a main commanders is released in the most popular mod of a game ever: WarCraft III: DOTA

I had a similar idea. But mine is more like C&C renegade(multi-player).

Sounds very similar to the heroes system in Warcraft 3; in most multiplayer games you end up playing as a hero + some grunts.

you r very wrong
pretty nothing about this
each player who controls a single unit controls it by keyboard something like in Doom without mouse but with look from above
and units has fighting like tricks
for example speed of throwing bullet very seriously depends on the speed of shooting target
so to really throw each bullet u have to move back and than forward

Then it sounds like Dungeon Siege (or one of the many other dungeon crawlers).

Sounds like League of Legends, which is like DOTA, which you already said was similar. How is your idea unique?

well i did not played DOTA
but i thought unit control in DOTA is by point and click
have u read all my strings in your quote?

Isn’t this savage?

I don’t really know what your idea is.
But it remind me one “rts” that I like a lot : Sacrifice :

  • 3rd person
  • main character controled with keyboard
  • units command with mouse/keyboard
  • evolution of units/spells with xp and choosen sides

There was lots of good idea in this game (And I was playing it on a 3D display… so old but there was allready shutter glasses 8))

I did, and you are right, DOTA and LOL both use point and click. However, the manner in which you move your character in a top-down game does little to make it different. Also many heroes in LOL have tricks: such as the farther away you are the more damage you do, slowing shots, running faster when chasing someone, besides the many standard abilities like AOE’s, slows and stuns.

A focus on small group control for a single player (such as a squad of 5 - 10 guys) would be a more unique game in the current market. Of course, if this is all for fun, then it doesn’t really matter what you pick as long as you enjoy making it.

So kinda like Battlefront?

I will admit I love those games.

Plays as an FPS when you are in a big war against another big team, and you must capture waypoints and junk. So you’re one soldier in a large army.

The issue with having multiple people control units on the same side is that it’s not longer an RTS. The main important element of an RTS is being able to quickly control many units at a time and perform strategy as a result. If you have separate players controlling different characters I would argue that it is no longer an RTS.
