Ouya - Oh yeah?

Potential and a dollar will buy you a cup of McDonalds coffee.

100 dollars/second, wow, what happened? Did notch twitted about it?

There is a quote by Notch on the Kickstarter page, so he must have said something publicly about it.

As of this post the Kickstarter stands at $1.15 million…with 29 days to go

people who think this could succeed have no idea about the whole market
learn about the entire history of SEGA
then understand why apple never made a console

and then come back and rethink

A console that solely depends on third party multi-platform content will not be commercially successful anyway.
And creating a console is a HUGE risky investment. Which is why we only have 3 companies doing it.

Also see these and tell me what they have in common with the above:

They all bombed ! =D

Never heard of that Apple “multimedia technology platform” device before.
Well then lets say “never again” made a console =P

What is interesting though is, that this Apple device is conceptually similar to the original XBox, which basically was just a boxed windows PC…

I dont care with the free game, if it’s really what it said then good I’ll have cheap android.

Guys I just read the FAQ, the whole “Free to play” thing is bit of a misnomer. They mean that every game will be either free or have a free demo. No game is paid only, this way you can try before you buy. Of course there will be support for paid games AND paid in-game items so relax.

From the FAQ:

  • Business model is same as everything, you get 70%, they get 30%. This looks like Google Play will not be on it, but some sort of Ouya-only marketplace.
  • This thing isn’t just games, it can also have apps.
  • If you are a dev and want to be featured early, contact them at devs@ouya.tv

With the Kickstarter well above $2 million on the first day, this thing has a HUGE potential.

EDIT: Do note this has support from Notch and many other leading indie/AAA devs.

I totally don’t get the point of any of these devices. I highly doubt there will ever be a successful console that doesn’t fall into the classic model:

  1. Sell hardware at major loss (at least initially)
  2. Make money on software fees.

So if the company in question doesn’t have hundreds of millions to billions to risk on sell-in…I wouldn’t hold my breath. Develop stuff for Lego mindstorm if you want a geek factor platform.

AFAIK Nintendo sold the Wii with a (tiny) profit, from day one.

You could argue that the only reason Sony and Microsoft sold their hardware at a loss, was because otherwise it would become too expensive for average Joe.

I think the price of this console it low enough to be affordable for said Joe and thus, as a result the financial strategy might be more Nintendo-like.

I believe that your correct about the Wii, but it’s a one off. My real point is that these things are find to think of as toys, but unless sell-through is in the 10s of millions I wouldn’t think about it too much.

It only needs luck, just like any other success story in history.

Maybe 1 game (minecraft port, etc) will draw enough attention to it, for it to gain momentum.

Agreed. Some killer games at launch is all it needs. Stroke of flawed genius basing it on Android (though hopefully Jellybean, not ICS) because that means there are already a ton of games available for it at launch but for one small problem - it’s designed for touch, and consoles are all about controllers. So not one single existing Android game will be any good on it. However Android is pretty easy to code for so making games for it is going to be easy.

They will easily be able to sell this machine at a profit as the hardware is now commodity priced but if I were them I’d skin the Android experience and have it all routed to some specific app store which they take a cut from. Developers won’t be making any money though because like all formats before it that used the “open” model (eg. 8bit, 16bit, PC) it will be rife with piracy amongst the target market (pre-teens, teens, and generally people with bugger all money, or people who have a general dislike for paying for software).

As I understand it every Nintendo console has been sold at a profit (with the 3DS being a possible exception following it’s price reduction).

But still I’d assume that the plan is for the Ouya to make money from its App/Game store rather than its hardware.

Personally I find the idea of a cheap, fun, hackable console quite appealing (more so than the Raspberry Pi, not that it’s quite the same thing) although I wouldn’t bet on it being successful.

Very true. Also many existing games might not look too good when scaled up from a 4-inch screen to a telly.

My take is let someone else take the risk and create that game/app or whatever. Many things might/could happen…who knows…next year linux might break the 2% desktop barrier. Like I said earlier…I wouldn’t take any of these hardware devices seriously until they break 10m sell-through barrier. Until then it might be a fun toy, but not much more.

And that is a nice point, I will surely buy it just to have some fun code on it.
I think many Android/Java developers will be instant buyers.

It sounds like a cool little mini-puter. If I ever want to write something for android it would be a cool test box, but maybe a bit (a lot) over-powered.

You’d be wanting a Raspberry Pi for that then.

Cas

Yes, a raspberry pi for testing the low end and an Oh-Yeah! for testing the high end.

I was thinking today about hooking up a Pi to a touchscreen and making a PiPad

This will only run one game at a time, and a larger percentage of those won’t be huge titles.
The Xbox 360 only has half. I know it’s old, but it sure does for even titles like Skyrim and even Minecraft.
I doubt we’ll ever run short soon.

My biggest worry is if I’ll get to beat Angry Birds on there. I already beat it on my iTouch, phone, tablet, computer, television and microwave.
