Objecty - tool for 2D game devs. Animate, edit and more!

Hey,

my name is Jon and I run a very small indie company called SKN3. I am posting some information here about our new app called Objecty. We have just released an alpha demo for people to try and would like to get as much feedback as possible.

Objecty is an app for all game developers regardless of engine, language or framework. Object makes game artwork and asset related tasks a breeze. We can pack textures to improve game performance; Animate characters using a skeletal structure to produce efficient and fluid graphics; Create game objects that allow us to organise things without manually editing data files, and a whole lot more!

Basically if you have ever made a game at some point you would have needed to make an editor, manually edited some text files or generally just do some grunt work in a pretty inflexible way. With Objecty our mission is to change that, without changing what you make games in!

So that’s the blurb and I hope this interests you guys so go check it out!

Thanks!

Hi

You only talk about Mac and Windows support in the video, I’m clearly disappointed (as a GNU Linux user). Good luck.

Hey there check out the description as well. We would like to support linux too. It really depends on how much support we can get. We are able to compile for linux it is just limited resources means we need to target the most used platforms for game development. Linux support will arrive at some point though

There is one main library of code we have written for windows and mac, and this would need to be ported to linux. It wouldn’t be a giant task but the extra work would come with having to support a 3rd platform. So without trying to sound like i am repeating myself, we will hopefully be looking to support linux in the future.

Does it mean your application is not written in Java?

Which library needs a port? If your source code was more portable, supporting a third platform would not require a huge effort.

The code library that needs porting is for doing some additional stuff that the existing cross-platform library does not. The rest of the code can be compiled for linux however so its not a gigantic leap to get it done.

It is written in blitzmax using a lib called maxgui. I posted it here as it might have interest to java game makers.

Ok.

Sorry to be a bit harsh. It seems to be an interesting tool and there is a real lack of WYSIWYG editors targeting the Java platform.

Hey its all good criticism. Totally get the lack of editor situation, its what started me on this path. Nothing fit my needs for a game I was making so I ended up making it.

Its just my job to try and convince people that Objecty will work

You know perfectly well you’re spamming. You’re also breaking the rules of the WIP board as it’s not ‘java gaming’ related whatsoever.

Further, this topic is of absolutely no use to the community, as its sole purpose is to plug a kickstarter project.

Well I am trying to promote a kickstarter project but only as a means to an end. If it was up to me I would not have to use kickstarter and I would continue working on Objecty until it was done and then release it. I honestly am trying to get the word out about Objecty as well as find out what people want. I have had some great response and feedback from people in other forums who did not consider it spam to talk about Objecty. As response from some other forums I did a massive 2 week code bender (250 hours worth in 2 weeks) and got a demo out for people to try.

Another good example is that Linux as a target is more and more wanted by various people. That was emphasised by replies on this forum.

But well I thank you for you time, a shame you can’t see that it is quite relative to game makers…

You are allowed to plug a tool, as long as it is ‘java gaming’ related.
Ok instead of just spamming with multiple threads I will just start this one and carry it on!

This is rather manipulative… saying you’ll stop creating new topics, by starting yet another topic and declaring it’ll be the last.

I am a long standing member of monkey and blitz forums. I wont try and argue with you as I can see how it looks.

My apologies.

Are you a long standing member of TouchArcarde, GLBasic, NewGrounds, FlashPunk, ModDB, IndieGamer, GarageGames and System11 too?

You didn’t even put the slightest effort in it, as you simply copy around entire posts:

You, sir, are spamming, and you know it.

I am not a long standing member of those forums, I don’t have the man power to be everywhere at once. I can see how it looks, I am only 1 person with limited time so cutting corners in forum topics is clearly making it look like spam. My intentions were not spam, my intentions were to finally be able to post about Objecty to people that might be interested. A moment I have been working towards for months and months.

Again I understand it looks like spam so I apologise, I am not trying to argue you to move the topic back or anything here am I?

from KickStarter:
Pledge £50 or more

All of the above plus you gain access to the developer forum where you can help shape and test new builds of Objecty. The developer forum is where all the magic will happen and we will genuinely be listening to your suggestions and comments.
You might want to work on your marketing approach. You basically say that we have to pay to get access to a (sub-)forum for devs and to be deemed worthy of a reply. That’s the weirdest ‘bonus’ ever, especially as you littered the forums of the same devs with posts, where we genuinely listen, for free.

Well how does one back out of an argument where somone has made up their mind and is now going out of their way to prove it?

You are entitled to your opinion and I apologise for offending you.
All of the above plus you gain access to the developer forum where you can help shape and test new builds of Objecty.
Thought that was quite clear? As a reward you gain access to frequent early builds and get to shape Objecty with suggestions and ideas based from those builds?

You left out the part of the quote is was refering to.
The developer forum is where […] we will genuinely be listening to your suggestions and comments.
I was trying to give you advice, but you seem to interpret it as an attack. Limiting input (and discussion) to customers that not just pay for the product, but even pay more than that, is an incredibly bad idea, not to mention how odd it feels to those left out. But I guess you think I made up my mind, searching for more and more arguments to bother you with.

I think you should listen to more than the people who payed $50 to make something actually successful.

Riven your response has not exactly been constructive. I am open to constructive negative and positive criticism, it is how I have shaped Objecty and the campaign so far. (I have noticed you have modified your responses to make them more objective post-post)

Well that aside I would be happy to hear any negative / positive criticism about the Objecty app that anyone may have. How did you get on? Did the demo give you a good idea of what it could do? Is this something you could use to help make games when java is a target language?

[edit] and I will give the reward a tweak if kickstarter would allow the description to be changed after somone had already pledged.

Only in my last message, where I added a few sentences. In the other ones I merely fixed typos and grammar mistakes.
