New feature: picture of the day

I second a few stats, however not whom is actively voting. I like my privacy.

Seems you can’t see your own pic’s rate.

Ofcourse not. Once it’s out in the open, people will try to manipulate it. There is filtering going on behind the scenes to prevent abuse.

… and therefore it will remain a blackbox.

And what about after it reaches the hall of fame, it does not matter after i guess.
Also, it might be awesome to link to the thread where the picture is posted, with most of the pictures i got curious about it orgin, most of the time i want to click it to see what game or program it is.
I dont know where these pics come from and how its saved, so i do not know if this is possible to implement.

Is there a way to force a new picture every day on that feature?

I think it is totally unfair that it’ll skip days just because an image doesn’t get a high enough average rating. Maybe make the average rating can be a little bit more forgiving or something. (Or maybe just delete the images from the database if it doesn’t make it in the amount of days… but that is just mean.) :stuck_out_tongue:

Images are removed if they don’t get picked for a month.

I don’t think we should just make any image the Picture of the Day. I think we should aim for a certain threshold for the calculated score, and be patient for some image to reach that threshold. If you don’t like the fact that one image is there more than one day, make an effort and upload a really good image yourself

Last but not least… why is it ‘totally unfair’ - can you elaborate ?

Well, I just wanted to know the reasoning behind it.

I would like to see pictures of different projects get their chance in the light. I think that the bias will always be toward eye candy, because that is just human nature. We like to see pretty stuff. But, gaming isn’t just about 3D graphics all the time. It is mostly about getting exposure to new platforms, variety of game play, and different types of visual styles.

I know the system was put in place to stop abuse. I just wondered if the rating system could be given a little slack to allow greater variety of pictures of the day. (However, I can’t argue that a revolving door for dead images works well enough to inspire greater pics.)

It’s picture of the day, not functionality of the day. That said, some diversity would be good, maybe give images already featured for X days have diminishing returns on their votes for Y days. Or hey people voting could just go for diversity.

well it could be “RANDOM picture of the day”, with some algorithm so that it doesnt repeat images if there are more…

What do you mean exactly? Once an image is featured, you cannot vote on it anymore, and it will never be featured again.

On a side note: I just hacked in POTD comments. The implementation is pretty crappy. We’ll see how bad it actually is.

The POTD shows up in the unread posts, I woke up to 10-12 topics titled POTD. Also, it shows as a child of chitchat.

Why would replies be invisible from the ‘unread posts’ listings?

I didn’t know, it was just a little odd. I guess the main problem is it’s hard to tell the difference between them all.

Edit: never mind, better now

The reason that you were flooded with unread posts, is because I (automatically) created a topic for every previous picture of the day, so it had to catch up a bit.

I removed the forum integration of the replies, as it just got too messy.

I’m curious about the PotD today… It’s from you Riven, did you create that world generator? looks very impressive!

^ This would be really awesome.

People can already put the link to a webpage that describes the image, somehow.

I second this. You should’ve linked us somewhere.

POTD has been removed. Barely anybody was adding pictures, barely anybody was voting. Even notifying people there where pictures they didn’t yet vote for, didn’t do the trick.

Who’d have thunk.

Yeah… seems like we’re not that kind of picture-productive Community.
I, myself found POTD an extremely cool Idea, but yes. The images were missing. Oh and sometimes Pictures didn’t show for me, so I couldn’t vote
