JGO domain-name changed ?!

For two days, I was wondering why the JGO-site wasn’t working,
but now I found out that the domain-name has changed,
(from javagaming.org to java-gaming.org), wtf ?!

???

Did I miss something, when/where was this announced ?

I’m wondering how much more people are now
still waiting for the JGO-site ‘to be up again’ …

AFAIK It has been java-gaming.org for months now. The old url (javagaming.org) was probably redirecting you to java-gaming.org and that stopped for some reason.

It’s been like described above for… years? It’s not the first time the javagaming.org one has been down.
Just wait, Riven probably has his reasons :point:

When I took over JGO, I couldn’t take over the domain javagaming.org, it is still the property of Oracle. Hence I registered java-gaming.org and asked the kind webmaster (Charlie) to redirect all traffic from javagaming.org to java-gaming.org. So while yuou entered JGO through javagaming.org, you’ve always had java-gaming.org in your addressbar.

Every once in a while javagaming.org stops redirecting traffic. I will contact Charlie about this.

Thanks for reporting!

What about showing some popup (showed within page, not real popup window) informing users that domain has changed if they come from the old domain? The change is so subtle that many probably just didn’t noticed.

There is nothing that distinguishes the http requests. Absolutely nothing.

What about changing the redirect on old JGO domain so it adds some GET parameter, and when you detect it, you redirect to URL on new JGO domain without it and show the popup?

As I remember, for a few months riven did show a little message about the name change at the top of the forum window.

It’s a pretty minor issue. Most people would come here from google searches which use the hyphenated name.

Only old timers with stale book marks will have the old address stored.

Btw the response time for problems is pretty quick now!

Funny how patient everyone was with ChrisM compared with Riven lol.

In the bad old days the forums used to go down for days with no explanation. Not so anymore.

Funny how people assume there is a deeper meaning behind every techincal issue

To me, it’s a huge change every time it stops redirecting, so I guessed everybody noticed, and that there would be a reason for it to happen :stuck_out_tongue:

There has been a popup? When? Never seen one.

So i thought the last weeks the site is down again as javagaming.org is not working. Google helped me to find the tld with the hyphen inside.
Gladly the site is not down

There wasn’t  CommanderKeith is probably confused with another site.

There is stuff done behind the scenes to so fix this problem. At the moment we’re losing 30% of traffic to JGO.

And, I should have had the re-direct done sooner. My bad, lots going on as always. The domain transfer request is in and Oracle has agreed to release the domain name to me. As soon as Oracle sends their reply e-mail, I can repoint the DNS.

Chris

I still think it’s mind boggling that Oracle’s lawyers released the domainname to JGO!

I’m very grateful Chris and Charlie worked out the legal issues (if any).

By the by, http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/2D/index.jsp has a link to javagaming.org. I actually followed the link a little while ago and wondered why it went to a nonexistant webpage, then googled it and found this forum, and it was several minutes before I was convinced that it was actually the same site that the link was supposed to be pointing to.

After the changeover, which should be any day now (if Oracle does not send in the agreement within 5 days it reverts to me automatically anyway), we should then change back to javagaming.org, keep all old links in tact and then work on SEO best practices to help build the site out. I can even tap my web team from my day job for assistance.

Chris

No worries, and yes, there were some. Biggest one is our re-branding as JGO so we don’t run afoul of their naming requirements.

Does anyone know of a way to remove individual URL histories from firefox (without removing the whole lot) as the older domain keeps coming up first for me.

shift+del on the dropdown entry

GOOD NEWS! The original javagaming.org has been transferred over to me as of this evening. I am waiting for the lock to be released tomorrow and for the DNS cache to propagate. I can then point to the servers and we have the old site completely back in tact. W00T!
