JGO at GDC

I think this has already been asked, but I can’t find the post.

Anyone from here going to GDC? I might be in the country, and if I am I’d love to go if I can find passes/time. Is anyone from here going to be there so I might be able to put a face to the name?

Kev

EDIT: JGO -> GDC (thanks CDF)

I assume you mean go to GDC 8)

If I had the money I’d definately go, but it costs too much to fly over, stay a few nights in a hotel and get into the conference as well.

Although I’m tempted by GDC Europe…

Chris and I will be there.

Ill be hanging with my baby (Darkstar, not my wife, but dont tell her I said that) in the Sun booth.

Chris Im sure will be gadflying all over the conference.

I am tossing around the idea of going, but it doesn’t look like there will be much there for me to justify burning vacation days and a couple grand of cash. It would be nice to meet Jeff and Chris though… dunno

Vorax,

More there than you can imagine…you just have to know the right people to hang out with to get you in

-Chris

yeah.

Im too old and geeky for noisey drunken parties… but if you wanna see the real night life of GDC then Chris is da man to hang with.

Ok - now I am swinging on the Go side. I am going to look into flights and hotels.

Ouch!

Between flight, hotel, conference pass and spending for the trip it looks like it’s more like $3000-3500 :o

I am swinging back on the side of not going now. That’s alot of cash to go partying :). If your going to convince me, do it fast because in 2 days, the price will go up by another $500 :frowning:

Vorax, whereabouts in the world are you? I worked out flight, hotel and conference pass (classic pass) at about £1000, about $1750. Of course with meals and spending and all that it’d be more than that…

edit: I meant 1750USD of course, not 1750GBP…

Well, the flight, hotel and pass is $2600 Cdn, then I need food, entertainment, spending and local travel- so I figured 500-1000 for that. – it all adds up.

Yeah its a lot of moeny if you cant justify the conference as anything other then a party.

Dont think I have a good argument for you, sorry.

the solution would be to convince your boss that its usefull to be there, might turn an expensive party in a payed party; whilst getting payed for being there alltogetter

Hmm…I thought about that. I’m not sure he’ll buy it though. My boss is the VP and he was charged by the CEO to initiate some pure research. I developed a prototype 3D interface in Java for one of our applications using my game engine…perhaps this is an angle I can use? …doubtful but it’s worth a shot

I have been to GDC last year and ChrisM (well Sun Microsystems) gave me a free expo pass and a free pass for a roundtable or another kind of conference. You lose nothing to ask for.

I’ll be there. I’ll be running an open mic / roundtable at the IGDA booth on the thursday for anyone interested in Alternate Reality Games, so you’ve all got to come, boost the attendance :).

Can you elaborate a bit about Alternate Reality Games? Do you have a game you can refer to as an example?

Thanks

I would hazard that Second Life might be an apt example.

I suspect in general what MUD folsk call “sandbox games”.

Not quite sure what that means but ARGs generally mix medias (games, real life phone calls objects, emails, text messages). Heres a bit more detail:

Oh, I was wrong.
