The Beast (c.f. www.cloudmakers.org ), and ILoveBees ( www.ilovebees.com Halo 2 launch marketing campaign) are the two best-know previous examples.

Second life is a Virtual World, but not an Alternate Reality 
The differentiation is that the former is very much a computer-generated simulation of a non-existent, fictional world (with generally relaxed laws of physics etc), and the latter is very much a real-life experience with no simulation, which just happens to come together as a complete game, indistinguishable (within legal and ethical bounds) from your own everday life.

Short answer: derives from The Beast, which came out long before Majestic.
In terms of how it plays and how it was constructed Majestic is substantially different from pretty much every other ARG, such that although there are quite a few games that derive from it, none of them has ever been an ARG that I can think of. Majestic’s direction was largely away from the ARG genre, not towards it.
Shrug. All personal opinion of course…
