JDK 1.5

Javalobby posted a program to get Tiger alphas. Anyone tried it yet?

worth a shot ;D

Will.

Turns out demand was so large Sun is planning on releasing betas of tiger 60 to 90 days earlier in the early access program. I guess that means some time between december and february. I can’t wait to see it.

Excellent! Inter-continental faxes are just a bad way of working… ;D

The offiical word:

It’s great to see Sun do this sort of stuff.

Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!

Will.

More news (rumors?) on the Tiger front:
Shared VM “bug” fixed
http://www.javalobby.org/thread.jspa?forumID=61&threadID=9836

Can anyone verify this? Does this bug getting fixed actually mean Tiger will have some level of VM sharing?

And more importantly, how do YOU think it will affect gaming

This bug is not VM sharing… that’s the related bug linked from this bug.

This appears to refer to the sharing of class definitions. Likely borrowed from Apple’s implementation. Considering that I don’t notice any particular start time improvements on the Mac, I doubt this is all that spectacular. I’m guessing it amounts to some memory savings, which is welcome just the same.

I am hoping for improvements in control over the garbage collector. I think there is supposed to be a new profiling interface too.

It’s available NOW:

http://java.sun.com/developer/earlyAccess/j2sdk150_alpha/

and I’ve already filed a bug report

Downloading my copy right now.

So what do you guys think the impact on gaming development 1.5 will have?

I like 1.5 already!

MODIFIED

NDA dude, NDA.

Huh?

  • elias

“You cannot and must not discuss this preliminary release outside of the email list Sun has provided. By downloading the preliminary J2SE1.5 you are agreeing to be bound by a non-disclosure agreement that prohibits you discussing this publicly - even at Javalobby!”

The last thing Sun needs is some numbnuts at cnet writing a story about how 1.5 crashes everything.

Hi
I can honestly say, without breaking any NDA, that I have never had 1.5 crash on me

Endolf

That’ll teach me to read the licences thoroughly, eh? Merry christmas to you all!

Just out of curiosity I read the licence from the download site once again, but I can’t find the exact quote given. Where is it?

  • elias

I tried to email something to the address given for feedback and it bounced! Sigh…

bump

I still like to be pointed to an NDA section of the jdk 1.5 download. Even if it may be obvious to some (GKW?).

Request seconded - I saw no such disclaimer either.
