HUGE CHANGES FOR JGO - PLEASE READ!

Dear JGO community,

Almost a decade ago, while sitting on a conference call to discuss how Java technology could be improved for video game development, the consensus was that we needed a community. So, armed with a mute button for the concall, a domain provider and a $15 charge to my credit card, JavaGaming.org was born. The goal was to create a community that would become a focal point for the growth of Java in game development and provide an open, candid forum for discussion and discovery. Through the ups and downs what we have built, collectively, is the strongest community for game development in Java technology on the web. Bar none.

Take a look at JGO at various points over the years:

YUCK!

Well, to be fair, I was trying to do everything myself: writing, graphics, HTML, etc. while still doing my primary job. WAY too much for anyone to do on their own and, eventually, the site settled into what it needed to be. A forum for kick ass community members to come in and help each other to become better at their craft.

I think we were very successful at achieving this.

And now we are going to enter a new era for the community.

Riven has been working with me to migrate the JGO community to our own server, where we will have control over the improvements we need to make to keep the community growing. As well, I have been working to get the Javagaming.org URL back under my control so that we are free to do what we need to, to keep the community in tact. That transfer is in process.

In the meantime, Riven has stepped up and has put forth a tremendous amount of effort to host the new JGO location, stage the new forum, fix all the broken bits, and we are now ready to pull the switch and migrate to our new home! So, here is what you can expect.

  • By Friday of this week, we will put both this site and our new site into staging mode so that we can dump the database and move it. (We are hoping this takes no longer than an hour)

  • There will be a re-route in place that will move us to a temporary URL. We will let the community know what this will be by tomorrow.

  • We will be welcoming suggestions for new features and will now have the ability to implement themin a timely fashion!

  • All passwords/logins will remain the same. No need to re-register.

I want to thank the community for your participation for close to a decade! We have seen several successes come out of the members of our humble group and I look forward to the community helping the next great successes as well.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to Riven. He is truly comitted to the community, cares about its growth, and has done a tremendous amount of work to help ensure we can continue to grow. CLAPCLAPCLAP

AND!!! THANKS CHARLIE! Charlie has been there to help keep JGO running through all of this craziness. Thanks again for all of your help!

More to come!

nice ?

very nice

edit : inded clap to all those motivated JGOs (you, Riven, Princec (as the first poster : damn you spent to much time here ;)), etc… so much)

Very! We can now start adding new features and functionality to the site.

You missed a vital part of the plan.

  • Frantic hand waiving & tearing of hair when it all goes horribly wrong. :persecutioncomplex:

You’ll be pleasantly surprised of how little there is to go wrong at this stage

do not abuse… mouhahaha

Ah good some action. There was a few suggestions from my post here: http://www.java-gaming.org/index.php/topic,23041.0.html
Basically making this site modern and a greater community.
I was going to look into creating something myself, but now I see action Ill wait and see

I might be able to lend some help if needed.

This is just a huge plot for Riven to get even more data for his “special” signatures …

Thanks everyone who is investing into this community. I know I don’t participate as much I used to, but I do lurk daily and enjoy the content here, so thank you.

I would like to give my very personal advice : make change slowly, dont change everything at once

maybe embeded flash video (esecially for shwocase) would be nice :persecutioncomplex:

I’ll say another thanks to Riven for doing such an awesome job making so many pushes for this. I think the most I ever did was poke Chris a few times, so I can say for sure that it was Riven’s perseverance that got all this to happen.

And also a big thanks to Chris for making this community in the first place, even though it was so ugly when he first made it ;). It is definitely one of my favorite places on the internets.

Expected downtime: 2-3 minutes.

You can write that down and hold me accountable  If anything goes wrong, it’d be my fault.

I need to teach you all the subtle art of “padding”. Riven meant 20 - 30 min, not 2-3

Someone is setting himself up for an epic fail

This is really great news - and nice work everyone involved.

Nah, I just checked the migration script, runs exactly 175 seconds. Surely we can do everything else in the remaining 5.

Hurrah Hurrah!

What could possibly go wrong ::slight_smile:

Cas

I would go so far as to say it is the best Game Dev community full stop (very likely biased). Of all the forums I frequent this is easily the one most likely to yield helpful friendly and good advice. And more often than not Riven is the one giving it.

Didn’t blahblahblah try something similar back in 2003, only he took donations from people, went off to write is own web server, and no one ever heard from him again? Oh right, that was a jgo replacement attempt.

Well, good luck with this! And thanks for the commitment!

:-*

Can’t wait. 8)
