Hey all, I’m thinking about making a 2D tile-based RPG with a battle system kind of like Final Fantasy (the early versions) or Pokemon or Goldensun, etc. My problem is I am at a total loss to come up with a name so here I am asking for your suggestions. Anyone have good ideas for RPG names that they wouldn’t mind sharing. I also suck at artwork so any tutorials/tips about game art would be awesome as well. (Sorry if this is the wrong section I wasn’t really sure where to post this)
Try making the game before you worry about those kinds of things because for one, the game may change throughout development and the name might not fit, the game may never be made and also many game names come about during development as you can see the game become something and a name that fits just comes about.
Also for artwork, an RPG would take a lot of artwork so maybe going with a style you are comfortable with so you can produce a lot of the assets you need and give the game a bit of style, or you can use a lot of the free art out there.
Yah I have been just going with no name for now (the name of the project in Eclipse is “NoName”) I was just curious if anyone had suggestions.
Yup there is certainly a lot to do >_<. I have already started doing some of the artwork and it is terrible. I can do floors o.k. but sprites? forget about it. I am definitely not an artist. I might look at some free ones for ideas though. I’ve been trying to find some good tutorials but I haven’t had much luck.
A name of a game, especially for a RPG, should be unique, stuck in your head and/or reflect something about your story.
I think the best names are when they don’t have immediate relation, but are very fitting. Like “Half-life” - there isn’t really any radioactive decay itself in the game, but a lot of science, so its good.
Obviously you shouldn’t call it “King Arthur” without having any character or story related to that name - thats like “tony hawks pro skater” without tony hawk
so basically you give the game just a temporary project name, even big budget games do this.
I mean Natal is now Kinect - just goes to show that it can change quite a bit.
Other than that RPGs need a lot of work: enemies, npcs, dialogs, boss’s, story, items
everything needs graphics and so on and so forth; and remember in a top down rpg every character / enemy need sprites and animations for each direction: going left/right, going up/down
(thats why my project switched to a 2D sidescroller - but I will make a tops down RPG someday)
but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it - just be minimalistic, if you are alone with artist
later on you can still replace graphics obviously
Final Fantasy 1 is just the perfect example what you can do with minimal graphics; and today FF13 is one of the most gorgeous games.
Kevin Glass made a game called Legends of Yore, graphic-quality-wise it is what I am talking about - personally I don’t know why he is doing such a minimalistic job when he has an artist and wants to make money, but whatever
doing everything by yourself - start by learning just basic photoshop
doing the first grass floor tile - a green 16x16 or 32x32 or whatever ever, then add “noise” and there you go, its a grass tile =D
Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately right now I’m stuck with GIMP for image editing so Photoshop isn’t an option. GIMP works though once you get used to it (which I’m not). Also thanks for the link Swattkidd.
Wouldn’t put any of those names on anything serious, but they make great temporary names
Uhm, how about: you get shrinked down to about the size of a bloodcell. Then you have to enter another person’s body and eliminate the evil virus inside him to save him/her?
However, to reach the final boss you have to collect five sacred stones which are guarded by their own boss. Or something like that.
