Game Jolt - Ad Revenue Sharing

Hey guys, this is the lead developer of a new site (http://gamejolt.com) that went live the beginning of this year. It’s currently only for freeware/open source games, however we plan on moving into other spaces as well.

Anyway, the low down:

Game Jolt allows developers to host and publicize their freeware games.

  • Unlimited number of files can be uploaded for your game. Up to 100 MB per file currently.
  • Able to post news articles for each game (with RSS/Atom feeds).
  • Screenshots can be uploaded, which can then be embedded on other sites/forums, etc.
  • Video uploading and linking. Up to 100 MB per video currently. High quality and embeddable on other sites.
  • You can upload the soundtrack for your game and it will stream on your game’s profile page.
  • Developer blogs (with RSS/Atom feeds).
  • Gamers can comment/rate your games.
  • Yes, we do have Quick Play/Instant Play functionality too (works with all browsers and requires no extra download).
  • Shouts/private messaging.

It’s all run by the developers themselves, so you have full control of how your games are displayed on our site.

We’re currently trying to get as many developers and games as we can. Old games, new games, and even work-in-progress/incomplete games are welcome. You don’t even need to have a file for your game to add it to the site.

We’d appreciate any feedback you may have on the site, or ideas/criticism. If you like the site and would like to be a part of spreading the word, let us know!

Thanks a lot and hope you like the site!

Interesting but, what do you aim with this portal? Competing with the commercial game portals eventually? How do you generate revenues right now, if that’s the case? I saw some banner ads but do they generate revenues? I just want to understand what you aim.

I hope you have a server cluster / own datacenter!

And how are you going to finance that beast? (not that that’s any of my business…)

How is gamejolt serious? I just signed up and hit the “update game” page but that page gives me a blank page! Tried with Chrome and Firefox.

We’re currently working on that, Jerome. Since you signed up as a user, you don’t have permission to upload a game. We’re going to make it so that when you land on that page as a user, you’ll be given the ability to change to a developer.

This site is still new, and things are still being worked on. I appreciate the feedback. That should be fixed by tomorrow.

And to Riven, we’re equipped right now to push to any limits necessary. It’s obviously not pushing much data out now since it’s relatively new. Most of the data is served up by a CDN (Content Delivery Network) and everything’s burstable.

I’ll be sure to post our revenue model later today.

OK great. I was really surprised since the rest of the site looks really good and you presented it as something that seems serious business wise. We saw multiple times in the past junk posts and such on these forums so I wanted to make sure this isn’t the case, which isn’t as I see it. It might be a good idea to mention what is not stable yet or inaccessible though.

Would you mind replying to my first post please?

Thanks

he did

hmmm, yeah.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. We do generate some revenue from the ads on the site. For now this is our main source of income. We also hope to implement profit sharing of ad revenues for all games across the site with the developers. It’ll need to be much bigger for this to happen, however, and that’s why we’re pushing for more games.

Game Jolt will eventually “split” into sections such as Freeware, Open Source, Indie, Flash, etc. The Indie games will be able to be bought through the site and downloaded. Sort of like Steam, but quality assurance will be done by user ratings/reviews/downloads, etc. and not by us. We will take a small percentage of the sale.

We’ve got a lot of cool stuff planned, but it’s really on the shoulders of the game developers. We can only move as fast as them. We’re trying to make a perfect place for Indie game developers of all sorts to host/publicize their games.

If anyone has any games, we’d really appreciate it if you’d post them up on the site and told others about us.

Also, we do have a public API. If JavaGaming would be interested in interfacing with it, they could pull in all the Java games from Game Jolt and display them on the site. Bandwidth/hosting is done on our side, but the content is displayed here. Just an idea.

Thanks for the info CROS.

I plan to upload my game once the next version is available. I can’t upload the current one for many reasons on my side. By the way, any update concerning the blank page I see when clicking “Upload a Game”?

Your site looks pretty bad without cookies enabled, like there is no style sheet.

nice concept though.

Yeah, the Upload a Game will be fixed soon. I’ll post here when it’s done.

As for the cookies, I’ve never even thought about that. Yeah, it does require cookies for the stylesheets to show up. I’ll see what can be done to fix that up. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Looks nice, I have signed up and maybe will post something in the future.

when did you start collecting games. cause 4 pages is pretty good.

Yeah I like the site, its rather nice, I need to play around some more.

I just thought of an idea. Could you make a beta section? cause then us developers could get more testers :).

I totally love the concept and will submit my games there I think =D

Looks like a pretty nifty site!

All right, should be fixed now. When you click Upload a Game, it should ask if you want to become a developer. Let me know how it goes for you.

No longer needs cookies. Let me know if it works for you now.

Thanks a lot, Zammbi. Looking forward to it.

It pretty much rolled out January 1st. Started collecting from then on. We have around 50 games, which isn’t bad for something so new.

Thanks!

You can mark your game as “In Development” at the moment. Any specific ideas on the beta section? I’d definitely be willing to discuss possibilities for that, and if any other developers could pipe in too.
