Galactic Progress

Galactic Progress* is a game focused around technological expansion. This game is an online game, in which every player begins their civilization on a random planet, in a random solar system. The player must fund research and improve technology, allowing them to explore the galaxy and prosper. Resources can be mined from planets and their moons, allowing players to always have the ability to gain resources. If you are able to make contact with other players, alliances can be formed, but so can enemies.

*Galactic Progress is a temporary name.

Here’s what one of your solar system’s planets may look like:

Here’s an example of a solar system you may begin in:

A possible name for the game:

Amazing. Decent graphics ad I like the concept. What engines did you use?

This is just LWJGL with a little bit of help from Slick-util

Hey, cool game!
Name suggestions :
-OrbitalOverloard
-OrbitalOverride
-Overmaster
-Galaga
Keep us updated on the progress you make.

Thanks for the ideas! (Galaga happens to be my favorite retro game)
I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated.

I quite like “Unbound”.
It’s suitably obtuse for the space 4X genre, yet has a double meaning, both of which are applicable to your game;
‘released from the shackles of ignorance/home planet/solar system’, and
‘released into a universe without bounds’.

That sounds really good. I may want to use that if you don’t mind.

EDIT: It seems that name is already in use. That’s a shame.

This whole project is the reason I friendified you in the first place! (I say this because I’m slowly turning homosexual because of your awesome Galactic Project.)

How fast do you guys think the game should run? One year per minute? 1/2 per minute? I want the game to run fairly quickly as I want gameplay to be somewhat quick so there aren’t such large gaps between scientific discoveries and other events.

Lots of games of this type allow the player to choose the game speed within a range. Any excuse to program your own sliders. Just lending my support, super looking forward to seeing some new features.

This game is a online game with potentially many players, so I don’t think there should be dynamic game speeds.

It probably depends how much happens per year, right?
To decide, try to quantify it.
EX : (estimated how many years in a game)/(desired time)
or maybe : (how much changes in a year)/(how much you want to change in a minute of gameplay)

Thanks for the suggestions!
Here’s a link to the beginning of a game design document I’ve created:

This game looks great,-- since I’m a huge fan of science fiction I’m really looking forward to seing what this game could potentially becomes!

Do you know when a demo will be ready?
Cant wait to try it.

I’m hoping to have pre-pre-alpha nonsense going on early to mid December.

PS: I updated the original post with the new planet view. It looks much nicer now but I think it still needs work (especially the clouds).

The planets look nice all around, but that texture really needs some work no offense! Its just too pixely and it doesn’t really show anything other than pixely stuff! I like the white ring around the planet though, it gives it a little extra appeal!

I re-wrote my Perlin Noise terrain generator to use less memory, and have improved the terrain quality. I have updated the image in the original post accordingly.

I have started revamping the solar system generation system, and am trying to allow for a wide variety of planet types. I would appreciate feedback and suggestions for my current planet compositions:

I think that each planet should have a chance to have all of the resources but planets that are know for those resources will have a higher amount. Keep up the good work. ;D
