The remote control like control is very attractive to me in terms of new game play concepts and natural player moves. I know the hardware is far far less powerful than XBOX 360 and PS3 but again the innovative controller seems to bring really cool new game play in games!
wow. what a gay name. One of the Nintendo spokesman makes peace with it by saying “…I’m sure when people heard the word ‘Google’, they probably said ‘what is that?’” - I’m sorry, but that just isn’t the same thing.
besides, you KNOW kids are going to be saying “oh man I have to Wii really bad! [giggle]”
what was wrong with “Revolution”? o_O
Ha! I think the Wii (I didn’t realize it was renamed to Wii until a friend told me) is a joke. The controller looks like crap. If I wanted to play a game with DVD-style remote, I would put in Red Dwarf and start fiddling with my remote. That would be more fun.
I think it is silly to call it a joke without trying it. If it works well then there is a decent chance that it will open a lot of opportunities for new styles of games. I’m interested in seeing more at this point.
Talking to a few friends who are developing for it, they are VERY excited about the controller. While the hardware is not the most advanced, I believe that we will see some pretty groundbreaking stuff hit that console. I can’t wait to get mine!

no doubt that the controller and games are still going to be good, but daaaamn it’s more of a “Revolution” than “Wii” ANY day
I was going to post a nice and meaning full reply, but i have to go Wii instead…
Its agonising i know…
Yes it’s a very dumb name. ;D
Perhaps they are trying to shed their kiddy image. No self-respecting child will want to own a product called “wii” - they’d be laughed out of school.
A dumb idea, but maybe not the name of the console? It’s certainly getting a lot of attention to the fact Nintendo have a new console on the way. All they need to do is come out with a new name closer to release and they get the media focus again…
yeah but they can’t really change the name anytime they want, especially if they’ve already been producing the console with the name “wii” attached - even before they made the announcement. it would take several months to get a console into the market even if all they did was change the name =o
personally I’m just waiting for Nintendo to say “hah! april fool’s! 15 days late or so!”
What’s the problem with a console name? It’s just a name.
How a person can identify itself that much with a product name? It’s all about content… If the profuct is great then the name has basically no importance.
It’s a good point. I look forward to the PS3 being renamed the Sony Poo.
Actually that would probably be a big hit with the five year old demographic…
If they do keep it, what are the odds they are currently desperately trying to blag Queen’s “We Will Rock You” for the advertising campaign…
Play Station? hooo…that’s original! :
XBOX? hoooo…inspiration! :
Just kiddind!
and Game Cube? … same thing.
I thought it was quite neat up til this point…
We had Playstation 3
Then we got XBOX 360 - (usurping the “3” and going a 60 better)
Then we got Nintendo revolution - (360 - a single revolution - while also being a good name for what the product was doing)
Now we have Wii - which just breaks my pattern entirely
Kev
I’m not a defender of the Wii name but my guess is that Nintendo made serious psychology analysis and probably figured out that the effect of this name on the non-core gamers would be positive. After all their primary goal seem to target this type of gamers first while still targeting hardcore ones.
In the gaming industry there is only really one set of commentators that can be entirely relied on to hit the nail on the head.
hahahahaha ;D
Actually, following on from the PA link there is actually an interesting post here about why the name might not be correct at all, which makes for interesting reason. I think if it does turn out to be a clever marketing ruse and the console turns out to have an altogether less toilet-related name I think many gaming fans will breathe a sigh of relief.
