First of all… I’m not related in any way to that project.

There are more than 150k downloads… it can either be a good thing for the image of java or a bad thing. However, it helps to increase the number of installed JREs and that’s for sure a good thing for all of us :slight_smile:

Right now it eats alot of CPU power (compared to clients written in C/C++) and I’m wondering wich options are there to enhance it’s performance. One thing wich instantly came up my mind was using the “-server” switch, because that makes perfecly sense since it’s a long time running programm… but there has to be more, right?

So… if you have some spare time to waste and like to do something more productive than crossword puzzles, you can give it a try :slight_smile:

[Btw 2.0.1.0 seems to perform better than 2.0.3.2 - speed wise… cpu usage seems to be identical]

Interestingly, it’s an SWT application.

I don’t understand why they don’t provide a webstart version. That would be the best delivery method IMHO.

First, I downloaded the jar, not noticing that it isn’t runnable by itself. You need to install the EXE to get the required libraries. I also tried to download and compile the sources, however, the 2.0.3.2 source distribution isn’t complete either. The systray4j and the irc code is missing. The website for systray seems to be down/removed, I didn’t even try to find the source for the irc stuff but used the class files from the EXE distribution. The code doesn’t compile without errors, although this is easy to fix.

I eventually also found some .torrent file to try out the tool. Memory footprint is ~32M, it needs about 1-5% CPU power on my 933MHz machine. The UI feels a little bit sluggish though. Could be caused by the somewhat clever way they draw a graphical progress bar thingy over an SWT table which could otherwise only display text…

150k downloads sounds impressive but I’m afraid they add up all downloads and I alone did three. They might still conviced some 1000 users to install Java. I don’t understand why they don’t recommend 1.4.2 instead of 1.4.1.
