Alien Flux Alpha Test 6

Once more unto the breach brave testers!

This one’s got the right dlls in it, and should work or bail gracefully on everyone’s systems. Although it might leave your screen a bit brighter but I know about that small bug

Fixed the crackly thing too. Sound popping is hopefully cured mostly as well.

Cas

no errors or bugs what so ever. one little thing though hehe, i don’t like the sound when the ship is respawning  it’s annoying.

sorry for being picky! i know it’s not the most important thing you have to fix, but still! )

Before I download that zip file is it a .jar or a .exe? Last time I downloaded AlienFlux it was a .exe hidden inside a .zip.

Lucky me! I still get the NPE! (on a PIII/XP/G400)

/M

I didn´t but in this version I also get the nullpointer exception! After resetting Jelly_incursion…

Coil, I guess it’s an EXE - the Java archives are usually named AlienFluxJar.zip.

I’ll abandon trying to patch a5, and go straight for this one. Downloading now…

Only the EXEs been updated. Make sure you’re trying that one, and make sure you’ve got no rogue LWJGL.dlls lying around. Or OpenAL32.dlls for that matter.

Cas

Do I have to report if everything goes fine??

I always run it from within winzip so I always have the right dlls etc (basically its like running from a new folder).

Sorry Cas. NullPointerException after resetting jelly_incursion.

Grrrr. Took ages to download and ended up being a broken archive. Let’s try that again… >:(

I don’t think you can successfully run it from Winzip. Always unzip it somewhere and try it from there.

Cas

Yeah, Java will look for the native library first in the JRE’s binary directory, so any DLLs in the current directory will be overridden. Delete all rogue DLLs you have, and the Winzip way should work. I’m afraid due to the way Java loads JNI libraries, there’s no alternative to this! Just Do ItTM.

Okay, this release doesn’t work for me. :frowning:

It now says “OpenAL 1.0” on boot, but apart from that it behaves the same - gets to menu, sound works in Options screen, unexpectedly quits on clicking New Game. Last console message is “Resetting feature: jelly_incursion”. Desktop is left in 800x600, high gamma.

This time I’ve noticed that after it’s crashed in this way the sound won’t work in the Options screen on subsequent app restarts until I’ve fixed the desktop resolution.

If I pick 32-bit mode in the options screen, the game restarts fine and returns to the menu, but as soon as I move the mouse the game canvas disappears and focus is returned to the console. I can then CTRL-C the process. Last messages on the console are as follows:

Resetting feature: jelly_incursion
Runtime error #9601(trap) in JET

Are we getting any closer to the problem? ;D Cas, do you want to produce a full tracing build for me to try, or is supporting my hardware not worth the trouble?

Argh! It always worked directly from the zip, but I will unzip it and try it again when I get home then  But I expect it not to work again =P

It still works… The 32-bit option doesn’t seem to do anything though. At least i get banding in the colors in the menu and it looks the same in 16 and 32 bit. Or are you losing some precision by ramping up the gamma?

Cas - with the amount of times I have DL’s the Alpha tes, I could have DL’d the JRE and the finished game

Just proving that people will sit through big DL’s to get access to good content. And AF is good content

Ah, but the folk in here are “special” aren’t they?

We’ll be releasing the game as a cross-platform JAR as well as a Win32 exe for those that already have the JVM anyway and who want it in Java. In particular, people who are running Linux and MacOS X who are in dire need of more games. The .exe version is just for the 99% of people who don’t have JRE1.4 installed or for those who want fast startup time

Egon - yes, gamma buggers up precision. The best way to really check if you’re in 32 bit is to look at the Alien Flux logo - it’s very smoothly fogged in 32 bit but noticeably banded in 16 bit.

Cas

[quote]Fixed the crackly thing too.

Crackling when playing sounds? If so, then no…it’s not fixed. I’ve played it some more and noticed some crackling. Not really bad but noticable. That’s on a SB Live! Value.

Ok, i’m in 32bit mode then. I haven’t noticed the banding in the logo until now. Looks much better in 32bit mode.

Are you just tracking compatibility issues or what,
cause I’ve just found some logical problems.

When you die, the amount of thingies killed aren’t reset.
I’ve been playing your game a few times now, and once again got into level 1, which pissed me off, so I just shot all those blobs myself, which invited much of those yellow things. Funny, by finishing those with a few bombs I was allowed into level two. Why?. Same trick, onto the next level. I ran out of bombs, so naturally, I died.
Once again, level1. Whoops, I got from lvl 1 into 2 by killing just a few of those transparent bubbles, MAGIC!!. Wahoo, onto lvl 3 by shooting just a few yellow piramides AGAIN.
Lvl 4, lvl 5, lvl 6, damn, big bug won’t die.
Just try again, again, again, oh oh, no fast level skip.
Nothing to shoot but a little red star, (which can not be shot? No, don’t tell me  ), and another red star!! AArgh.

Also, the ship don’t re-align correctly when you die.

So, I played your game a few times now, and I’m beginning to think: It not thAt cool.
It’s a looker, but it’s missing something. Maybe just a scoreboard like someone else mentioned, but some feedback from the blobs you’re trying to save (usually  ) could be “enlarging the immersiveness of the gaming world”. Or whatever else YOU have planned before it’s a RC.
After lvl1 I just want to get fast fast at another go, but when I’m shot out of lvl 6 (can you shoot the big one? I got like 30 small ones against me, no fire is getting close to it) I’d appreciate some ‘aaaaahh’ and ‘o noo’ or ‘boeoehoe’ :’( from the blobs. ( or something)

O, and a big ass version of your shaven logo before the game starts.

On a celeron 600 and gf2MX all seems well.
The game crashed (locked) my pc horribly two times now, but probably to double .dll’s. probably :stuck_out_tongue:
