A call to all game developers of any genre

I was thinking about that this morning, and I find that I’ve brought little to the Java gaming community in the last past months and more, for many reasons I won’t explain here. But I have an idea that could help JGT to some extent because honestly I find the traffic to this site is really low and JGT deserves way more better visibility; the site is of high quality, gives a good impression and on top of that there’re many great Java games already.

So, I was thinking about asking every game developer that has a web site to link back to JGT from their site. I mean, this is a really easy and quick action to do for anybody. With this action I don’t expect a lot more traffic to JGT but who knows what it could do? I guess it would help to some extent at the very least.
ChrisM or any Sun employee, please help us. What could you do on your side? I’m sure you have some means in this regard.

Kingashi, could you provide us a small/medium image of the JGT logo that would be used to link back to JGT? I’ll try to find time during launch to create one and propose it later. First I’ll take the one from the site and simply do a resize. This will take a minute.

Thanks for help from anybody.

EDIT: JGT = Java Game Tome

What is JGT?

Sorry, Java Game Tome. I assumed everybody knew that.

I think I’ve heard about this site before, never visited it.

Doesn’t look very stylish, but there are many games there.

I’d rather not… There’s no inherent value in a game being made in java over any other technology.
Having a list of java games is just as pointless as having a list of C++ games would be. Sure, there’s some value for people scouting out some technology (it shows what’s possible and what the community looks like).

There is some value for the customer in having a site that lists free in-browser games, sure, but just listing games per technology?

IMHO, this is about having a portal of Java games that offers some level of great content. It’s not about technology even if the site mentions Java. Who cares about this aspect? You could have a portal of Flash games mentioning the tech. Would it be an issue? I don’t think so.

I think it is a great idea for minigames.

It is kinda unreasonable for bigger games cause you want the user to stay at your game :/.

I dont think so ? first thought when talking about Java is portability, java can be web casual game (pluginless)

you 're right but maybe they can be an interrest, flash game are nearly all identical basically “2d sprite with lot of vectorial draw”, Java can enable lot more powerfull application or at least different one “looking for java game” could be a sinonym of looking for “other kind of game”

Why??? Please explain your point because to me it’s unclear.

because there is more depth.

If you play a minigame, then you finish and leave.

then instead jsut click a link saying, “more great java games”.

however, with a big game, they (hopefully)will stay for a long period of time. They can do more things than in small games.

hope it made more sense

Well, no matter the game, the goal of my request in this thread is to help Java game developers by having more visibility via JGT, hence having more hits with your games. JGT isn’t the only mean to achieve this goal but it helps for sure. Understand that here I’m covering the aspect of initially attracting players as opposed to frequent game players.

in another hand if you provide a Website with only few game but highend game (casual but great to play) I think you will gain in visibility. maybe too many game can become “counter productive”

OK, I extracted the JGT logo and scaled it in 3 sizes: unscaled, 50% and 30%

What do you think? Do we want a modified/enhanced logo or this is good enough?

I think that’s a great idea! The banners look good. Let me fine-tune them some more (as I have the original) and put them onto the Java Game Tome.

PS: Also, if you have a Java game site that lists games, let me know and I’ll link back to your site as well.

Well, on my site I only have my own games. Is it what’s you expect? And the 2 I’m talking about may not work well in Mac and Linux now. I need to update their dependencies…which shouldn’t take long time.

check out JFG (I think it is called that atleast ::))

it’s got some good 3D games.

Hmmm, I think it doesn’t exist anymore. Have a valid link?

wow I dont understand why this thread was met with negativity at the start.
This is a great idea. It can only help the community, there is no real negative side effect.(except maybe no side effect, but still worth a shot).

DzzD made a few good points.

totally!!! people are always looking for something fresh and different on the net.

I agree, sadly I think alot of people might get insulted if there games are not excepted on a “high end” site, but I really think this is a good idea for the reputation of Java gaming (for the professional side of things).
problem is getting someone to make one, and maintain it.

but yeah if all Java gaming sites could be linked to JGT that’d be awsome. Hopefully The Tome gets more developer friendly in the future.

search it on facebook.

there is also a website, I jsut dont know the url.

I’ll be honest, I’m not really feeling the love enough to do this, which is a shame, as I normally love helping out communities. I really feel like me and my games aren’t cared about here. I get very little feedback, if any, and most people who do give feed back never check my games out again to see what’s different. Maybe if there was a review swap like place where I could go post five reviews for other peoples games, than in return get five back I’d feel more like people even noticed me here, but right now I just don’t think that this, or any other java community is worth putting any effort into helping. I think we need to have tighter bonds here and more usefullness before we ask something like this.

Also, I’d much prefer a youtube type site where we could upload our own JWS/applets, have them rated and commented on, and have the best displayed on the front page.
