Your favorite 2D and sprite tools?

How do you create your 2D graphics?
How and with what tools do you create scenery?
How and with what tools do you create sprites?

I would love to give my own answers, but I haven’t done any graphics before, I’ve just ripped stuff from other people’s files when I needed to use something for a character in my animation… ::slight_smile:

fotoshop

I make all my sprites with a combination of Gimp and the left side of my brain. Blame my left side, not Gimp

Seriously though, Gimp is awesome - a kind of painful to use until you learn it Photoshop.

Does anyone else have a problem with anti-aliasing when trying to draw sprites with photoshop? How do you get around it?

Is there a way to convert a detailed drawing into a pixelated sprite? did they realy freehand draw thic pic with the pencil tool?

Sure, got lots of problems. How to get around it? Come on;) Most of us are programmers. Get artists to help!

A scanner.

“did they realy freehand draw thic pic with the pencil tool?”

I’ve seen some really talented artists create great pixelations. Ask whomever you got the image from if they drew it… we don’t know here;)

A good place to “hang-out” and see pixelation artists at play is “pixelation.swoo.net”. Very neat stuff.

Kommi: Most of the photoshop functions put a toolbar up at the top where you can turn anti-aliasing off before using the tool. I have not however figured out how to keep it from doing it when resizing an image.

In photoshop, to remove anti-aliasing in scaling images make sure you use “Nearest Neighbor” interpolation (you can set it in the General preferences or when doing certain functions like Image Size…).

Also, as zparticle mentioned, for the selection tools (marquees + lassos), make sure anti-aliasing is off in the Option mini-dialog (choose Show Options from the Window menu). This is all for Photoshop 5.0 - it may be slightly different in the newer versions.

As for the sprite rip from Ragnarok Online, chances are, they drew the line art on paper, scanned it in, cleaned it up, and colored it in something like Photoshop. The colors chosen give a painted feel to it, but on closer examination, you can certainly see that great care was taken at the pixel level.

Man, that is the best freaking site I’ve been to in a good long while. Great great stuff going on there! Makes me really anxious to start working on my old-school style RPG (think Tales of Destiny. There was some genuine ART in that game).
