You know you're a hardcore Java games programmer if...

…you spend all day programming games, pausing only for food, sleep, and to post on the Internet about Java game programming
…you find it really hard to talk about anything other than programming
…you dream in bytecode
…your college history class notes are organized into an indented outline with curly brackets around every section
…“unwinding” is recreating Tetris
…you own a digital binary clock
…you can work up a sweat sitting at your computer
…you have ever considered James Gosling more important than Bill Gates
…you forget birthdays, anniversaries, appointments and such but the deadline of the next 4K contest is fixated in your head
…all your friends are from JGO Forums
…you have a tee-shirt that says “Will work for bandwidth”
…you have really pale skin
…you set your alarm to get up really early on the weekends to program but you’re often late for work
…you have no life outside of game programming
…you don’t mind being called a nerd
…coffee, pizza, Cheetos, and Chinese take-out are your four main food groups

Hope you like them… more ideas are welcome! ;D

… if you spend more time on your Ant build script than you do on your game
… if all of your RPGs-to-be stop development when you finish the map editor
… if you NEVER finish 99% of the projects you start
… if you create a “You know you’re a hardcore Java games programmer if…” thread
… if you reply to such a thread

that’s my whole life’s story :-[

… if anyone says “slow”, you shout “java is NOT slow!”
… if your skin lights up under blacklight. Not that you ever GO to places with blacklight … ;D
… if you curse good weather because it makes your monitor harder to read (soo guilty)

… if you check a website to see if the sun shines

… if you keep pressing CTRL+SPACE after the first few chars of a long word

… when you try a new video game, you wonder how you could realize such or such effect using Java
… you try to convince your workmates to use Java
… you use your own Java bases web browser, spreadsheet, word processor, etc…
… you play your own cell phone games…

…when you go to pixar movies just to see the graphics, and find 2 odd looking pixels in a certain tiger’s shadow.
…when your playing a video game and you stare at a certain feature for a while and get nuked from behind cause you were wondering what they did to achieve this effect.
…when max payne’s story is as moving as binary code

(ps, the first one is true! I did do that and was ashamed cause I we were the only ones above 10 years old in the cinema!)

DP

Hah! I saw “Cars” yesterday, and my 2 friends and I were the only people in the cinema!
I feel no shame for seeing the pixar movies. I feel annoyance if a 10 year old gets too loud :-X

... when you're intrigued by fur in the animation, to the point where you lose track of the story. ... when an animation movie features a plastic object, and you think "that's cheap! No rendering effort at all!"

Slept on the idea for a while, came up with some new ones…

…you have Duke tattoed on your forearm
http://www.octo-soft.de/ PIX/duke.gif

…you have watched a movie and felt high as a kite watching the earth-shattering fluid dynamics
…you own a beanie ;D
…you get up at 2 in the morning to post on JGO (or stay up…)

It’s 3:21 here.

…you read “you know when” threads to find common ground with others you may actually understand your dark obsession.
…you spend months subtly altering your career path to include more Java development just so you have an excuse to devote time at work to build your coding skills without getting fired.

…you find a bug in a console game and from that bug figure out how that part of the game was programmed, and how you would fix that bug
…you have ever screwed up writing a check and reached for the CTRL+Z

…you ship a commerical Java game.

now thats just rubbing it in shawn. I can feeeel the burn! :stuck_out_tongue:

Awesome Burn!

Kev

I haven’t shipped yet.
But Cas has!

Seriously though, I really beleive that. Any other measure is just a display of plumage.

you can still write? My handwriting has sufferes terribly when I do not write for longer periods of time.

Try to do the basic concepts on paper, so the leakage of handwriting won’t that big
