Xith or LWJGL ? Isometric or ???

Hi!

The game I am working on is going to eventually have a Diablo 2 style rendering. That is, almost bird’s eye view, maybe a view degrees lower, with 40 or so character avatars drawn on the screen, all moving around. Sort of what you might imagine in a diabl-style mmorph.

Is this considered Isometric? What category of rendering am I actually trying to get (I can only describe it as diablo 2 / warcraft 3 'ish)

Also,

When choosing Xith 3d, or LWJGL, what are the considerations? Are they to be treated as alternatives? When should one be chosen over the other?

Thanks a lot, I hope to hear from someone.

Xith3D is a high level API. Jogl is an OpenGL binding. LWJGL is an OpenGL binding plus some extras. Did you do Java3D or OpenGL before? Have a look at these three projects and then decide. No one is generally the best.

As Jens said, it’s not Xith3D vs LWJGL it’s more “Scenegraph vs No Scenegraph”. Only if you say “No Scenegraph” do you consider LWJGL (and compare it JOGL and such like).

As someone who doesn’t like reinventing the wheel, I always recommend that people go for the Scenegraph option if they can.

Xith3D will hopefully one day run on LWJGL (although little work is being done to that end currently).

Cheers,

Will.
