The kinect never really interested me but that I would buy. If it could be made to work with people moving in a room then it would make for some excellent house parties.
Looks really quite an impressive way of compensating for the restrictive fov common in most console games.
Though I wonder what the performance impact would be, and whether it’d be cheaper for people to just adopt wider screen TVs/projectors & bump up the fov appropriately.
Nice idea, however the style of projector (excluding the room sensor) used in that video usually costs 2 - 4 times the amount current gen console sell for. So unless Microsoft have found a really cheap way to manufacture them (don’t forget the cost of the actual console), it just looks like an expensive gimmick peripheral.

Only thing I use my Kinect for is as a microphone to voice control Netflix. It’s all right, but it occasionally hears conversation and thinks it’s a command. The gesture controls are useless in every respect, I actually have the thing angled so it doesn’t see me and go into gesture mode accidentally. But IllumiRoom loooks … wow :o

For gaming, I think the rift is still better. As for pranks, one of those pico projectors taped to a kinect might be cheaper
