Wolfenstein 3D clone

Anyone can play a raycasting game at www.java4ever.com.
The game is called “GUNNER MAN”, it try be a clone of great game “Wolfenstein 3D” :), unfortunally its a bit older, about 1.5 years, so the screen is no big, and sure it have any bug :P, but i hope that anyone can enjoy. (Please, be patient with the load… :))

In this web also there are other java stuff (2d, 3d, applications, …).

Bye!

Yeah!
Try this out anyone who looks at this!
This is a C 8)L game, but it don’t have good graphics 8).
Thank you caraiz!

www.java4ever.com is very cool, lots of nice stuff. The wolf clone could do with being significantly bigger tho

I like the software 3d engine, how does it scale up to lots of objects on screen?

Would be cool if it was controllable!
Very hard to control because of all the pausing… I couldn’t aim because the turning was so inconsistant. It was also very difficult to position my self at doors so I could open them… it kept taking a few steps towards the door then flying me past with my nose agains the wall.

Yeah, same here: Pretty cool if the controls were better.

Yeah, controls are messed up, i wonder if they are using a keystate flag (like keydown should mark a flag ‘isWalking’) vs looking for keyboard events in order to work. It seems like it considering you take one step forward pretty quickly, then a short delay, then you start running constantly, and then when you release the key you keep running for a little bit (as if a key repeat key was catching up or something). Just a little control tuning and the’ll be in good shape.

Why does the page require js? For what?!

I’d to lookup the src 2 times to get to the desired page… really annoying

edit:

I forgot to comment it

It looks nice but it’s too jerky to be fun.

I have not tested so well that feature, but its optimized (or that i think :P) to be faster if the objects are out the camera, or if they are static (without movement). I can say that the “teapot” have 1044 faces.

I’m sorry for the control of the game, when i have any time i will try to fix that problem.

Thanks for the posts!!

(If any are interesed, soon www.java4ever.com will be in English too ;))

Keep us updated when you have

Yea, I agree with everyone else - cool game but controls need to be worked on. I’m not sure if it was because I was an applete, but there was slow down or pauses everytime I shot or walk a little bit.

Nice job though.

Strange, it doesn’t start with the latest Safari beta, bu with Mozilla it’s loading…

Has anyone noticed that on Windows XP (Java 1.4.1_01) that Gunner Man runs extremely slow? Half of the screen will be the next frame, while the bottom half is still the previous frame. It takes 2 seconds before another frame is introduced. I tried running Gunner Man on Windows 2000 with the Java runtime that comes with IE and it runs fine.

P.S. How can Microsoft make a faster Java runtime than Sun! >:(

They have more resources to devoted to Intel compilers… they have after all been making several static compilers of their own for some time. And they tend to cheat in various ways.

Huu, dont trust the guys from Redmond!! ;D

But their Java version will soon disappear, right? Hmm, have you tried the IBM JRE, it sometimes “feels” faster to me, but I haven’t done any timestamps yet.

The last time I checked the IBM JRE (1.3) was faster than the MS VM, but it doesn’t use the tag so I had to use the appletviewer to try applets.

I believe it is already gone in Windows XP. You have to use the plug-in.
