WIP: SteamTowers

I’ve been working on this Tower Defense game for about 6 months, and I think it’s time to show it to you

There is still a lot to do, but I think it is at least playable.
It uses LWJGL and a bit of SLICK (for sound and drawing fonts).

Sound is really bad, and music is still in production.
Tested with Linux Mint, Mac Os X 10.5 and Windows (XP to 7).
The game is about 6 MB.

I would appreciate if you could post your FPS (see Webstart Title Bar, not displayed in Applet yet) without Framelimit, and your system specs.
The Framelimit can be turned off with F1 (F2 turns it on again)

Have fun

FPS with or without frame limiter stays at a constant 18.
System Specs: XP pro, Pentium4 - 2.00GHz, Java 1.6.0_16-b01, Firefox v3.5.3
I beat all four maps and enjoyed the game overall  how do you plan to proceed from now on?

Thanks for testing!
You enjoyed it with only 18 fps? omg

My milestones to a 1.0 release:

“Mechanics”:

  • save / load Games
  • Manual towerupgrades (standing on a tower for certain amount of time)

Content:

  • at least 10 Levels
  • 5 different Creep-Types
  • at least 3 End-Bosses
  • Soundtrack
  • Sound for all Towers, Creeps, Events
  • Headquarter destruction-animation
  • 2 More Towers

63 FPS limited, 200-ish unlimited. 2.0GHz Intel Core2 Duo, GeForce 9500M, Vista.

Worked nicely, looks good, and it was pleasant playing through the four maps - even though the gameplay at this stage only seemed to involve running between the towers as fast as possible at the start, building lots of flame throwers, and then just waiting.

I found the auto-repeat on the keys a bit annoying, both in the start menu and in the game (when choosing what to build). Press a key for a bit too long and the cursor is all over the place.

Also, the screen resolution on my laptop is a bit rubbish (768 vertical), and thanks to the Windows task bar I couldn’t see all of the game window. Maybe not an issue for most people though.

Good work so far!
Simon

Thanks, dishmoth!
There will be a lot of balancing and level designing before the 1.0 release - hopefully the game will be a bit more exciting afterwards
I think I’ll make a multi-resolution version in future…
Just for the record: what’s your screen resolution?
I plan to aim for 720p, but I’m not really sure about it.

Nice graphics ;D

63 fps with :

  • Core 2 Quad 2,4Ghz
  • GeForce 8800
  • Java 1.6.0_15

You really should do something on key repeat, it is not rare to not be able to select the wanted tower.

1366x768 (i.e., widescreen).
Taking the window frame and Windows task bar into account, a canvas height of 700 is the largest my machine is comfortable with.

Nice graphics, but you should make it so you can build towers anywhere. Good job

Very nice

1795 fps
c2d E8200
ati HD 4870
win xp
java 1.6

Nice game. I like setting and idea to build on specific locations. It will be good to have more difference in towers.
