WIP: Mummys Tomb

As usual I have run out of motivation for my current project so thought I would post where I am at. This is my first proper crack at a 2D platformer and also animation.

One day I’ll finish something… sigh…

I like it! I got frustrated with the controls though. I need my guy to be very nimble, ala Super Meat Boy. I think it has great potential though! It would be awesome to see Super Meat Boy crossed with Montezuma’s Revenge.

Nice game  When I jump, it is a bit strange. If I keep the space bar pressed for a very long time, the jump is not regular as there would be a sudden pressure or the ignition of a reactor.

Awww please don’t let this one die, it’s awesome! Reminds me of rick dangerous.

Kev

its a bit choppy.
Running Windows 7 32bit java 1.6

every few seconds the game will delay (including sound).

also when I close the applet, sound doesnt seem to get clean up when the destroy method is triggered, as I get a repeating click while the VM is open.

edit:
but other than that, the game has a nice feel. I found the jumping style novel. I would imagine it to be enjoyable if the delay spikes didnt constantly distract me.

Nice game! I like the graphics and it runs smooth. I like the idea that you walk in and out of the pyramid to enter new levels. Will play it more later on. I hope you can finish it!

Controls probably need a bit of tweaking, it’s amazing how much work you need to put to get exactly the right feel even for something as simple as jump response.

Probably my dodgey custom audio engine doing background vorbis decoding for the music.

I found a bug that makes some rooms considerably easier - if you hold down space as you jump, he’ll re-jump when he lands, but then also keep air-jumping until he hits a ceiling. Then, as long as you hold space, he’ll be stuck in the ceiling! If you are moving horizontally when you start the multi-jump, he’ll also move across the ceiling as he’s stuck in it, allowing you to pass over any hazards below.

I died too much, but I’m not very good at those games.

I had problems running it on Mac osx Plugin2 (in Chrome). when i clicked on the applet it just turned white.

That was my first thought too. Jumping needs to be as near to perfect as you can make it. At the moment it feels like it’s the game’s fault, not mine, if I jump to my death.

Also, I wonder whether the rooms aren’t too big and sparse, given that it’s very easy to die and get sent back to the start. In particular, I didn’t feel like giving the room with the switches a second try after dying near the end. I don’t know what would fix this. Smaller rooms? Save points within a room? Rooms that are more puzzles than platforming? Rooms that are more dense with challenges and danger? Just random thoughts…

Overall it’s good stuff and I hope you keep working on it. If there had been more levels, I would’ve kept playing.

Ahhhh I’m so glad you said that. I just knew it reminded me of something but I couldn’t quite put a finger on it.

It’s got a very nice feel. My only gripe is it’s a bit draconian (some might call it old-school and play it off as a feature :D) about dying. It’s frustrating to have to start over from the very beginning of the level, short as it may be. If there were a couple more things to do (a la Spelunky) perhaps that wouldn’t be an issue, though.

All in all, very nice!

Edit - bah, just read dishmoth’s post and looks like I’m basically repeating what he said

Same here about game being choppy. Didn’t hear sound though.

The game is actually roughly based around a very old Apogee game called Pharaohs Tomb. It had single screen puzzle levels and instant death level restart. I never got very far in that game because it was too unforgiving and I was planning to add checkpoints to each level later on.

Neither works on my Mac. Running Chrome 8.0.552.231. Game starts up but controls don’t work.

With Safari just a white screen.

Really liked it! A bit on the unforgiving side, but not too bad IMHO.

Jumping felt a little bit strange at first, but when I got used to it I think it worked quite okay (air-jumps aside of course).

Tried at work (so I couldn’t play it as long as I wanted to  ), and it run okay here where most things runs choppy. (WinXP, Core2Duo)

All-in-all a simple but very fun game - two thumbs up. Wish I could keep mine as simple and yet so entertaining
