Hi all, I know everyone is talking about Vista but, it seems that Vista has change the theme of Windows, from folder sort to no folders…
But what I would like to hear from the crowd here if YOU would support Vista once Vista is out, or would you rather stick to XP…

Personally, I’m not aware of any must-have features, so I’ll probably stay with XP until my next machine upgrade. It’s really the case of needed to test Vista compatibility for new programs that will drive a new purchase at some point. I dare say professional software houses will add a Vista PC to their test line-up.

WTF? Of course would I support it. But I wouldnt use it. I also dont use XP.
If there are any troubles the lwjgl team will sort it out. Booya!
(There will be some framework tests on different platforms and apart from that… nothing.)
Same here… I’ll just wait for when I need a new laptop in a few years. In the meantime I seem to be enjoying using my MacBook a lot.

I can’t say that I am too excited about vista… considering I have a nice shiny macbook which I too seem to be enjoying a lot ;D
I think it will see a migration of power users (and maybe regular users if the 26 different flavours of Vista work out too confusing) towards apple and linux, which will ultimately be good news for people writing games that run on multiple platforms…
This topic comes up every time that MS releases a new Windows. MS says “it’s great”, people say “i don’t need it”…and in the end, every user of a former version becomes a user of the new version. Let’s face it: If you want to play games, you have to buy Vista. It’s that simple.
Even as and informed user, but one who isn’t a real Microsoft worshipper I could see that XP was a whole lot better in most respects than the old '95-98-Me family of operating systems. I don’t really see the improvements that Vista offers over XP in nearly the same way.
Maybe I’m just not paying attention to the right channels, but even the features it does have seem to only work on some of the product ranges - I mean XP Home and XP Pro I could make sense of, but the five different versions of Vista mean nothing to me and if they can’t get the benefits and advantages of their new OS over to me as an MCP who tries to keep up with what is going on in the world of IT then I’m not sure they’re doing a very good job.
I’m quite looking forward to the Aeroglass stuff - not only because I’m a graphics whore, but mainly because of the OpenGL emulation. Anyone without GL drivers installed gets it all emulated by D3D, which should mean that the crappier cards with poor or no GL drivers should always be usable with at least GL 1.4. It’s also going to force quicker adoption of proper shader class hardware.
I hope that it’s going to give intel a kick up the arse to make their intergrated chips actually half decent - IIRC you need a proper shader capable graphics card to run Vista so they won’t be able to get away with their current unreliable and buggy 3d drivers.
As a user though the only thing I was looking forward to was the new file system, and that got dropped ages ago. 
When previous versions came out where there as many viable alternatives?
These day’s OSX blows XP away and will probably still be better than Vista, then there is the next OSX version in development. and in the Linux world Ubuntu keeps on surprising me (although yes, there is still a lot to do to make it non-geek friendly). I just don’t think these that this competition was available to previous versions of windows.
Admittedly the only reason for vista’s existence will be games that only work on it. Having said that my hardware won’t be able to run them either and I can’t afford to upgrade my PC again (especially after just buying my shiny mac ). When I do, if I buy a complete PC it’ll probably have vista on it so I’ll eventually get it by default. But I don’t have a need to rush out an buy it when it’s released or any time soon after. If I really want to waste some money and play new games I’ll probably get a PS3 (or a wii or a xbox360 ) as it will have a longer shelf life than a PC upgrade any way.
I wouldn’t exactly describe my self as a anti MS zealot I’m just not sure why I’ll want to shell out a few hundred quid on vista.
ah well pointless rant over.
although this might be a good thing for opengl it might be bad in the long run, as it might cause chip makers to become lazy and skip writing proper opengl drivers for there cards altogether.
I wonder if it’s sort of like the Browser thing now, where Windows is the IE of the operating system world, lagging five years behind it’s rivals in terms of functionality but winning out on popular usage statistics because the majority of people are mindless sheep.
Im not so sure of that…Vista is, AFAIK, going to emulate up to OGL 1.4 with no extensions. Which means no shaders. So games that use OGL are gonna look like crap compared to card that does have shaders. All this does is bring the minimum up from 1.3 to 1.4.
