Why do I aim too high ?

well its kinda complicated to explain but I will try.
every time when I looking for idea for a game I aim too high with my idea.
its like my last idea was to create a hack and slash like DMC game with smart ai, cell shading, rigid body and a lot of other stuff.
the problem is that I don’t know how to do half of this… it took my few days just to find out how to make cell shading…
so I said to my self well maybe I will just create a 2d platformer but then I was like “I don’t know how to draw >_<”.
any way wanted to hear what would you do in such situation ?

Draw stickmen
But really I just use something like Kenney. He is really good.

Well its not only you, many people (including myself) aim to high. I guess, we are just influenced or inspired to much by the things we see/the games we play and we want to create something similar.
A solution would be to think about a basic project, like a 2D platformer. Don’t plan more then creating that, read only tutorials about the things you need for that little project, choose theright library, plan how you create it and then start coding.
As soons as you finished (or you have reached a good state), you can think about new features, maybe add enemies tracking you…
By doing this, you don’t aim to high and the chance to succeed is a lot higher.
Just don’t loose your goal, just because you see other games with interesting features you like, maybe you can implement them in future but don’t think about them now.

Write a game for the 4k contest. It might not run next year, but even if it doesn’t you’ll find that the space constraint forces you to aim a bit lower.

This is a common problem with novices (and non-novices) who haven’t really finished a project. It’s hard to gauge just how hard something is until you’ve actually done it.

Like pjt33 suggested, I also suggest taking part in a “game jam” where you spend 2 days creating a game. You might fail your first (or second, or third) time, but it will give you a MUCH better idea as to the scope you should be trying for.

Ludum Dare is coming up in December, but there are other game jams all the time: http://compohub.net/

The next one is Asylum Jam, which starts tomorrow: http://www.asylumjam.com/
