Who thinks the name "Wii" sucks?

I didnt even know what you guys were talking about til I saw it in the Merc News coverage of E3.

Gee a name that noone can pronounce and means absolutely nothing. Im guessing the corporate lawyers invented it.

Wii, the name, sucks.

Wii, the system, may have a chance.

After seeing thier press confrence today (via the magic which is gamespot’s streaming video) I’d say it’s got more than a chance. :o They’ve got lots of genuinely interesting stuff going on and a strong showing of important games too. Couple that with the ridiculously high PS3 price and I think we’ll be seeing lots of wii under xmas trees this year.

And a speaker in the controller? Awesome idea. ;D

really, the controller is the only real doubt I have for the system. a remote-sized controller… I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be like those cheesy DVD “special feature games” (sarcasm, of course).

the speaker in controller sounds cool I guess, unless you’re like me, and have issues with covering the speakers with your hands on handhelds such as PSPs ::slight_smile:

do you have a link to the gamespot video thing?

Wii – pronounced “wee” is, I assume, meant to mimic the common expression used by a child having fun… so it does mean something… though the pronunciation isn’t obvious.

Not to be confused with “weenie” - slang for penis.

In the US “wee” is also a term little kids use for urination.

Gonna be a LOT of comments on that…

Looks like there’ll be a more conventional controller available as well:

I thought that was just a shell to the normal controller. It’s probably meant for all the emulated games.

My vote: I don’t particularly like it but it’s ok

Additionally the symbole Wii is visually applealling in my opnion since it the 2 i seem to capture attention plus the symbole looks original.

Ok, here is the meaning of the “Wii”. Copied from the UK&Ireland page of NIntendo Europe.

And, I like the name and the rocking console

It has its purposes. I mean everytime you go to the john, you’ll remember the console. Just dont forget your aim when chuckling at the coincidence about the name and what your doing

DP

I have heard that the controller is going to be referred to as the “Wii wand” - the hilarity continues…

Wii wands? ::slight_smile:

all first person shooters are going to lose their seriousness when you have to make the motion of cocking a shotgun…

Those people saying video games teach kids to kill will have a field day :stuck_out_tongue:

BTW, I happen to love the name Wii. It really has grown on me. Others I spke to in the industry are starting to feel the same way…

Yeah, over here with the game kids, everyone joked and hated it etc.etc., until E3…

After that nobody talks about the name at all anymore.
You just here “I can’t wait for the Wii!” and “The Wii is the first system I’m pre-ordering since N64” etc. etc.

So at least in the 18-25yr space I see, the badness of the name has evaporated and been replaced with hardcore branding.

I don’t think the name sucks. But I do refuse to pronounce it in any other way than “whyyyyy”.

From Nintendo’s Wii site:

A New Style of Gaming

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
