I’ve heard that almost all “Game <Art/Graphics/Coding/Design>” degrees are a waste of time, and you should focus on a full CompSci programming degree and pickup games on the side as you go. But, this is coming from a Psych major who learns this information second hand from CompSci majors at his College. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ray you may be at an advantage as you (seem to) actually get stuff done rather than sit and contemplate what type of tree would be theoretically most applicable to that problem you may wind up having down the road when X sub-system is implemented etc, etc. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not really disagreeing with what Ray said, but I’d at least look around and try to augment one’s studies with perhaps some online courses for design etc. if you’re serious.

EDIT: Of course however a general CS degree is quite valuable by itself, esp. if you get a job in something other than gamedev.

Yeah, that was pretty much the CompSci guy’s argument; That a game design specific degrees can somewhat lock you in to working in game dev. Even though they can still branch out into regular CompSci jobs, those jobs would hire a regular CompSci major over them so it puts them at a major disadvantage. Where as, oddly enough, in the game dev world they’ll take either one equally.

Thus, unless you luck out and get a actual job in game development, getting a game dev degree really limits your options in the real world. :o

What makes me angry is that employers look for CS degrees and those guys are not professional programmers. The people who are programmers, who have the gaming degrees and are good at programming will not get hired, and they are the ones the employers want.
