Which game to clone as a next big project?

I plan on making a port of some game in java, but I don’t know which one would be the best. Its going to be posted on Github too, for anyone who wants to see the source.

I had a few ideas in mind:

  • Wolfenstein 3D
  • Halo CE (Just the engine, not the assets… :wink: (May need a bit of help with that one))
  • Zelda, a link to the past
  • Quake or Doom (Mainly just the gameplay, too softcore for shadow mapping)
  • Minecraft (I think a minecraft clone would be original :point: )
  • Marathon (Bungie got me into gaming :slight_smile: )
  • Super Mario Brothers
  • Call of Duty

Should I even make a clone? Would it be better to focus on my own original projects?

I love you, Spacebeans. I love you so much, and I trust you will make the right decision. But before you disgrace the family name, I want you to think. Do you really like playing unoriginal games?

Try to clone projects until you are comfortable of writing all the code from scratch. I’d prefer Wolfenstein.

It’s zelda man! It’s amazing and has a great story line type. Maybe with the story I talked about :expressionless:

Make an exact clone of Super Mario Bros level 1-1. Gameplay, sprites, sounds, everything.
