Where is java going?

Hi all! I been reading “Java Software Solutions” by Lewis and Loftus the pass few days. I’m understanding java so much better than i did C++. What i wanted to know is, where is java going? I have seen programs that were built with java, and a few simple games, but will java every be used for more than web games and mobile phone games? And what is Sun doing to improve java?

  1. Click on the link to JGF in my sig, below.

  2. Click on “all games”

  3. Enjoy. You should be able to spot the most impressive games quite easily because of the screenshots.

Some of those look good. What about sun improving java? They working on anything?

What are Sun doing to improve Java? Assuming you mean client side Java, as server side is doing very nicely. Well, Java 1.5 is about to come out with loads of “improvements” (some debatable :-). Swing has a new theme. Yay! There are the JNDC and JDIC projects (BTW two of the most unituitive acronyms for technology) which help integrate Swing apps into the native desktop more seamlessly. Sun have limited resources to spend on desktop Java, so a lot of work has been done by Opensource developers such as LWJGL (for games), JGoodies (for Swing layouts and looks) , Xith3D (3D graphics), Foxtrot (threading for Swing).

So there is quite a lot going on.
