The title says it all
The recently announced MMORPG from Jagex called Stellar Dawn is likely to be pretty impressive and yes its written in Java.
Wakfu another MMORPG is pretty impressive too
The OddLabs Tribal Trouble series of games is still pretty impressive (technically).
Urban Galaxy looks pretty nice.
Pirate Galaxy also looks pretty decent.
All the games from PuppyGames are all pretty nice but they are probably more well known for their gameplay and polish rather then tech.
Although not done Resistance Force is very impressive technically.
There are others but that is all I can recall for now, check out the Featured Section for some others.
Wow, pirate galaxy looks really hot! I couldn’t have thought that game of such a caliber can be made in java :o
the one I am working on “Virtual ocean race 2” is IMO pretty impressive technically
EDIT: if you are interrested in its development here is the dev blog http://vor-2.blogspot.com/
Most of these games - including the Jagex one I suspect - play it very safe, technologically, if by “technology” you mean advanced use of GPU programming and algorithmical designs, in order to maximise availability to consumers. Pirate Galaxy looks very nice indeed though.
We’ve only just switched to using VBOs and stopped using immediate mode after 8 years!

games exclusive to browser = fail to me.
Browsers are slow memory hogs. weak keyboard shortcuts. really for farmville pinky teenies who never saw a desktop game

I disagree. I believe its only going to get larger a lot larger.
inded as “standard software” like office, I believe that everything will become web application in the futur
Aye. Most of the games listed so far fall into the category of “vanilla tech with good art”.
Wurm still stands out in my mind for being a working MMO with freeform terrain modification, crafting and building (the roots of Minecraft).
Wakfu and Revenge Of The Titans both stand out for doing "interesting’ 2D - ie. not just throwing a bunch of static sprites around and calling it a day. Something I always tried to do with Rescue Squad but was hobbled by a lack of good art to actually populate the world with.
Haha, RoTT is just throwing a bunch of static sprites around We just do it… nicely.

I hate using the browser.
I have tried awesome Java applet games and never came back because it is in the browser, no stand alone versions. Dunno why. It just sucks.
Do you know any Traders using exclusively a forex web interface? I don’t. Ebay is a pain in the neck on the web, and unfortunately Ebay desktop with Adobe Air is a mess. Adobe Air = crap. Why didn’t they do it in Java?
I hate all this browser pushing. Do you prefer to manage your mails with a standalone client? Yes! Do you use Web Interface FTP or FileZilla or something? FileZilla of course.
FAAATT client ALL THE WAY. NO DIET Please.
@Mordan which awesome java applet games are those?
p.s. I still have a gut feeling that your some sort of spam bot.
They way it is inexorably going - and it isn’t necessarily good but the unstoppable tide is, well, unstoppable - is that the browser is the entire window onto The Internet, and all things delivered via the Internet will come via the browser ultimately. What I think has been lost sight of is that the browser is just a single pair of technologies: HTML5 and Javascript. Before, it was accepted that to get all sorts of strange and esoteric functionality you used plugins. Now plugins are being given the hoof in favour of this lowest-common-denominator approach. It will ultimately mean anyone can make a device that can run anything, but that anything just might not necessarily be particularly cutting edge.

Well for most users, people like how easy browser games are to get up and running.
Personally I rather play an applet than install something. Installing is a hassle

Ebay has a quite crappy interface. In NZ we use TradeMe which any grandma can use, which is why its one of the top sites in NZ.
Do you prefer to manage your mails with a standalone client?
Nope I rather online. Gmail just very easy.
Yes! Do you use Web Interface FTP or FileZilla or something? FileZilla of course.

Well not everything would be great as a web app.
I also use FileZilla.
Except for a time critical company that needs all emails on record to be safe or something of the like,
I have never understood the real point in an offline email client. you need to connect to the internet to check for new emails anyway.
if there is any attachment that desperately needs saving then ill waste bandwidth and download it.
webpage mail is great for what i need, to the point that I never been tempted to try anything else.
You guys make the assumption people have 100% uptime Internet. I don’t and I’m quite happy with it. Internet is a time sucker. I’m much more productive and focused when I retire to my datcha without Internet.
We live in a semi-connected environment and this will be so for most people for the forseeable future.
OT on.
TradeMe is great. But i never could register because I don’t live in NZ. I wanted to buy rare OZ Sega Megadrive silver games ;D ;D, which bring me to tell you, Megadrive games owns. I Have 200 of them and have entertainment for 5 lifetimes.
OT off.
Anyways browser is here to stay, I use gmail because few free email services offer free pop. Yahoo and Hotmail are uber slow and totally unmanageable. gmail is ok but it still too slow for me. Server and link latency still annoying and sometimes Javascript bugs. And what’s the new google search engine. It starts sucking. With Firefox I have this search as you type stuff with half transparent foreground. I HATE IT. IT IS SLOW. You type and lag appears. This brings point #2. You have no control about the site updates. You cannot keep an old version of a web site. Can you???. Another big reason for my anger. I don’t feel I’m in control anymore. Google is turning evil and increasingly so as time goes.
Browser = BAD. But like a herd of sheep, people flock to it. Common they force you to get the site update! Have you seen people force feeding geese?
PS: i came here because people seem knowledgeable here and in a few years time I will java clone the best computer multiplayer game ever. Age of Empires : Rise of Rome. Like minecraft, don’t laugh, Gameplay > Graphics.
to get back on topic, what (OP) consider as an advanced technological game ?
I mean, what’s the most advanced technologic game ? (in java or not)
Crysis is pretty advanced?
