What're a nice headset?

Hi guys.

I want a headset! Since I’m currently located in the U.S everything is a lot cheaper here, than at my home country. Therefore, I’m going to get something nice. I will primarily be using them to listen to music, as well as play some games. Mostly DotA-like games, and defenately nothing first-person-shooter.

Here’s what I’m looking for:
I need them to be comfortable - I can sit by my computer many hours straight, and I have glasses. I don’t want to hurt my ears.
Also, I want excellent sound; I’m in doubt wether I need 7.1 surround sound, or 5.1 will do the job for my needs? I also need a microphone that will actually leave out other sound than my voice (I hear that the Razer Magaloden fails to do this, despite high promises). I would very much like to be able to adjust the volume on the chord, as well as mute/unmute. The microphone should be able to be either flipped up, or turned off easily. I want to be able to talk to people passing by, or eating stuff. I like bass. I do not care too much if they have have a YSB-plug, or the jacksticks. I would prefer jacksticks though. I’m going mostly for my computer, and maybe my iPod. I feel like it would be overkill to bring a really nice headset in the bus for instance - it’ll look ridiculous :smiley:
Also, I’ve tried having big problems with adjusting headsets to my head. Those were really crappy though, but I don’t want those kind of problems.
Lastly, if i’m going to throw a lot of money at them, I would like them to be built of a decent quality. I do hear that Razer Magaloden is not built well for it’s price, which is a major turnoff. It should be able to withstand some use, without chord-breaks in the microphone or in the ear-cups.

How good of headsets can I get for $140, maybe a little more? What’re you guys recommendations for what I’m going to use them for? I definitely do not want 7.1 surround if there is abselutely no need to.

I use the Ear Force PX21’s and they are pretty good. I actually prefer them to the Ear Force X31’s I had for a while because, I like that the PX21s have two separate channels that can be independently adjusted via in-line knobs. It’s also nice to be able to assign chat to one channel and everything else to another. As far as sound, when playing music and games they sound fine to me, and my friends only complain about the mic when I’m playing music loud. The PX21’s are also fairly comfortable, I sit at my desk with my headset on for long periods of time and they don’t get uncomfortable for me, with or without glasses.

Based on what I’ve used, I’d suggest TurtleBeach z1’s. you have the same dilemma i once had. Good quality AND a gaming headset. Sadly enough these 2 do not work together. I ended up buying a pair of headphones and external mic.
But i guess the Logitech g35 comes closest to your needs. It has a strong build quality, very well made mic, you can turn the mic up or down. and will mute itself when its up, and unmute when its down. It has some usefull buttons on the headset itself. Is very comfortable. Im not sure about glasses since i dont wear these. But they should be fine (test out first though!). The only downside of this headset is that its usb only. So you wont be able to listen trough it with your ipod. And youd look rather odd wearing them in the buss i reckon :p.

Also, the 7.1 is just bullshit. This stands for the amount of speakers and the amount of subwoofers, which is ridiculous to advertise it on headpones ofcourse. I do not know why they advertise this so much. I guess because the customers think: oeeeh the more the better! which isnt true at all in my opinion. Surround sound is nice, agreed. But a good stereo headphone has exactly the same thing. Positional audio.

I was in a similar dilemma a few years back, never really been impressed with the quality of gaming headsets. What I ended up doing was getting a nice pair of headphones. I already had an audio interface and a mic, but you can find decent USB mics that will outperform the mic on any gaming headset for under $100. As far as blocking out background noise, I just got used to using push-to-talk and never turned back.
