I wonder… Is anyone aware of some FPS game/project (or RPG, for that matter) with 3d engine made in Java, at least a little comparable with “commercial” games? I know for several attempts (Undead Arena, Wurm, Sharpshooter, Wolkenstein, Mace…) (no offence for anyone excluded
). Which one do you find the best, with most potential and why? Do you think Java has future in this genre after all?
There is the Agency9 engine: http://www.agency9.com/
The engine used by Odd Labs for Tribal Trouble
And also the engine I made which is used in the WIP (alpha) versions of Exigent and Pacifica
I think there is a future, but we still have work to do.
I didn’t mention Tribal Trouble probably because that already IS commercial game. I was hoping to hear about some new attempts people are making. Which is Exigent. Looks good, and I should really try Pacifica (am going right now…) to see it in action. Thanx for info. I also agree that we have future, but want to hear it from other as well, I guess…
Those screen shots are getting pretty old now (as well as the version you are trying), so here is a couple of new ones that have a bit more attention paid to the art (though both are still WIP’s)
(not in the version that is public)
This will be a commercial level product when I am done, but not a AAA quality game due ONLY to time and budget, not Java’s limitations.
[edit] Just to be clear - I do not think this is the best engine in Java, just another example - AgentFX (Agency9) gets my vote for the best complete engine so far in Java[/edit]
I like those screens. Especially palm trees. Maybe blending between grass - dirt is to sharp… But anyhow, it looks like something with commercial quality to me. Do you intend to sell the game, and if you do, how (where?)
I was busy tonight and here is my latest screenshot from Monstrumo!:
I will be submitting the game to online portals such as RealArcade (there are dozens of them). The portals collect Indy games such as this and resell them to their vast customer base. They market the game on their site (and with their partners/affiliates), users download a trial version, if they like it they pay $19.95 online for a key to unlock, and the portals pay me a percentage of that. I’ll also setup sales from my website and through other Indy sites as affiliates.
PS: It’s usually spelt Indie but for some mind block reason I always spell it Indy - Canadian thing? dunno
Something similar are garagegames that I am aware of. Only thing I am not shure about is if FPS genre is acceptable to them. Usually the size of games there are around 10-15 MB top. Can you tell me what do you intent to do with JRE? Provide it with your game or expect that end user will have it installed?
Ohhhh now there is a kettle of worms
You are indeed correct, size is an issue. I am hoping that something can be worked out - I will have to embed the JRE within my install due to expectations of the portals. Size is an issue that everyone using Java for portal games comes face to face with eventually - we’ll see how it goes.
As for your game, it is true that the portals are not much for FPS’s - but there are some portals that accept action games.- I suggest visiting The Indie Gamers Forum - List of Portals and going through those to see which ones are more focused towards action games.
Thank you, Vorax, I will look there :-*
