What hosting do you use for your websites?

Hello all, today I’ve purchased a new domain GoHarsha.com on GoDaddy and am looking for a cheap (affordable) hosting provider that doesn’t put any ads on my website. Currently I’m using 000webhost.com’s hosting, but it is showing some ads (once a day) on my site and though there is an option to disable it in it’s cPanel, it warn’s me that the account maybe deleted and I’m out on quest for a hosting company.

My requirements are:

  • PHP 5.2.4 & MySQL 5.1 (For WordPress)
  • Atleast 2500 MB space (Had some large files I’d like to host on my own site)
  • An e-mail account
  • Allows subdomains for my site
  • Supports FTP

And most importantly, I prefer cheap ones (doesn’t mean that I don’t wanna pay, but prefer). So please post what hosting you are using it and also why you like it (will ease me in taking a decision) and also it’s merits and drawbacks.

Thanks.

Hostinger.in has been added to my list. @Kefwar suggested it to me using messages.

Just found GoogieHost. It’s features (in free plan) are

  • 20 GB Storage
  • 200 GB Bandwidth
  • Unlimited MySQL Databases
  • Unlimited Email Accounts
  • FTP support
  • PHP 5.4 support
  • 99% uptime

This is a really good option, and moreover, its an Indian company located in Lucknow. Maybe I’ll change my hosting provider tomorrow.

Always fun to see how a company’s tiers are nuts.

Free: Unlimited E-mail accounts
$2.99: 100 E-mails accounts

$2.99: Unlimited Storage
$9.99: 100 Storage (100 what?)

Avoid.

I use InMotionHosting, their VPS-2000 package. With it I host sixtygig.com, and I never have had any issues with them and my site gets plenty of traffic between SixtyGig.com itself and my sub domains. I average around 70-100gb of data usage a month, but my limits are far beyond that.

Avoid web hosting that offer “unlimited bandwidth/everything” for $4/month, they’re all scams. It’s not really unlimited bandwidth, it’s “unlimited until you use more than they want” and half the time, that number is FAR less than with real hosting packages (with actual limits) are. Another big thing too is most those cheapo-hosting services don’t have basic features, like SQL. They’re literally just a glorified FTP account.

Those hosting services are great if you just have a ultra-low traffic site with no complex features, like say a small informational site for a local business. But anything you want to grow beyond say, 500 visits a day… get real hosting.

I’m using dreamhost.com. Haven’t had any issues with them.

I used to use a 123systems.net 10€ / year 256MB VPS but upgraded it a bit recently.

Used to run wordpress with lighttpd (basically apache) with fastcgi/php5 but switched to nodejs/expressjs on top of nginx because it suits me much better since it’s more barebones and on-hands - wordpress has so much stuff I don’t need or care about.

If you need to store large files, you may want to consider other options.

I prefer getting my own VPS and doing things myself. I went with DigitalOcean’s $5/month VPS, which gives you a 20GB SSD, 512MB of RAM, and 1TB bandwidth. I’ve setup Ubuntu Server 12.04, installed Nginx, PHP, and MySQL, and installed Wordpress. I also setup SSL/TLS on it!

Github Pages!

I think it doesn’t offer PHP. Is it?

Hi,
I use Linode but it’s pricey and overkill for me. It expires in a month and then I’ll switch to a smaller RamNode.
Serverbear has a good rundown and the different VPS servers available and their performance:

http://serverbear.com/compare/vps

Most VPS cost peanuts per month so I’d highly recommend them over anything else.
I host my sites on a VPS using apache tomcat which for me was easier than having to learn php, wordpress and the apache http webserver. Tomcat only required knowledge of java, servlets and JSP’s. If you decide to go that route, I highly recommend this framework for watching performance:

Cheers,

I used to have a VPS for 30 a month or something but figured it’d be cheaper to get my own computer at home set up and link it up to a domain. Said and done I now have a pc in the attic that is fast enough for anything I would like and I just need to pay the electricity for it

Just make sure it isn’t a fire hazard, because PSUs tend to explode or overheat occasionally.

I’m still with the same hosting service I was with the last time this question was asked: http://www.java-gaming.org/index.php/topic,26592

Thanks guys for your recommendations. I’ve subscribed to my college hosting and got 30 GB space on my college servers.

Dreamhost: recommend.
Hostrocket: I do not recommend.

Google App Engine is my choice! Doesn’t support MySQL though.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I thought it is valuable to share my findings. I’ve spent one month with 000webhost.com, and a month each with googiehost and hostinger.com while backing the data on the space I got in college servers. I must say that those free hosting services doesn’t give full resources. If you wan’t to test them out, 000webhost is the one which offered more speed compared to others.

But even that speed can’t be compared to paid hosting. I got ping times of almost 380-400ms while on those free ones. Recently I’ve moved to the starter plan of GoDaddy, and the ping times are now only 120-140ms. It’s a huge improvement of speed for my wordpress website. I’ll be writing a new blog post with detailed observations tomorrow.

I like to go the full VPS route myself.

This isn’t exactly surprising, in fact I’m surprised that you can get such hosting for free at all. There must be a big catch somewhere… :-\

As with jrenner I’d also prefer to manage my own instance and use a VPS, often there isn’t that much difference in price and you can host more. I’ve got an ex-enterprise Dell Poweredge with plenty of go in my loft, attic or whatever you may call it, but I can’t justify running it and mainly use it to tinker. My conscience feels mildly better hosting using https://www.greenqloud.com/, maybe they’re not the cheapest but it’s good, close’ish to me and doesn’t reside in the US .
