What genre/artists do you listen to while coding?

Hey all, first time posting here. I don’t know of it has been asked before (probably has) here, but I was wondering what kind of music you all listened to, if any, during those long code hauls. I’m partial to some techno/house myself, but I’m super curious to what others have to say :).

Cheers!

Lol Gangsta Rap, Rap, Rock… I am hella random when it comes to music.

However if I had a favorite genre/artist it would be Ice Cube.

And yes, I am white :stuck_out_tongue:

No shame! I totally understand though. Im pretty all over the wall sometimes too with my music selection

Love my metal!

Gojira (French band), Soilwork (I personally know the drummer AND they are Swedish, so extra cool) and Mastodon. Also some Knife Party occasionally

I don’t know, I’ve always listened to rock/metal, I can’t imagine not having it in my life!

Right on! Yes, you have to have some metal in your playlist! Classical is nice every once in a while as well, and I’ll definitely check out some of those composers.

Ambient is king, but sometimes I want something with a bit of complexity. Sometimes I listen to EDM, and when you do, try at all times to avoid anything with “Dubstep” in the title. Psychedelic EDM, Electro-Swing is AMAZING. And so is french house, that’s how daft punk got their style.

If your in crunch time and need to get something done, drum and bass is fast as hell. Try spor or some other artist. I know some bass music will get you through some debugging, but it is NOT for adding features. It just jumbles up your brain.

For concentrating, I recommend really ambient music, even if its something with 8bit bleeps.
For working FAST I recommend drum and bass, and Spor.
For thinking creatively, Daft Punk, Electro-Swing, French House music, and EDM.
For debugging, Classical all the way man.

There’s been about a million of these threads.

I’ll still post on em anyways.
I listen to a mix of Klaypex (EDM), Bring Me the Horizon (Metal), The Word Alive (Metal), We Came As Romans (Metal), and Relient K (Rock, but their newer stuff is more pop-like and sucks).
Of course you can never go wrong with the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Very… inspirational. :point:

Beautiful music.

Just watch. In a few weeks, we’ll have another one of these threads.

Seriously? Again?

There’s already been a ton of these threads.

I haven’t seen one in ages. Maybe my memory fails me. I just wish it’d be easier to get a quick listen to whatever it is people are listening to. Might find something new and interesting - but I don’t much bother copy paste searching etc.

On that note, I’ve mostly been listening to jazz and this recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8O-XrveIfs

Justin Bieber , Rihanna.

LOL JOKING.

Metallica, Scooter, U2, 80’s,90’s rock.Phil Collins, etc.

Just watched my first “Resident Evil” picture ever–(from library: “Extinction”). Had to check out Milla’s website after that. Did you know she was a musician? There are quite a few links of her demo songs/cuts.

http://www.millaj.com/music/index.shtml

I’ve only listened to two so far since my computer is partitioned such that the web-viewing side does not have audio (please don’t ask). One cut seemed influenced by Sade, the other a bit more in the direction of Bjork. She’s pretty good, though maybe hasn’t developed as clear a sound/identity as either of these other two. The production quality is good.

And it’s Milla Jojovich. :-*

[EDIT] The more of these I listen to, the more I like them. There’s a pretty wide range. Also, some are a bit more raw in sound production than others.

I’ll list some:
House (deep, mainly)
Trance (not trouse though)
Ambient
Trip-hop
Metal

Well right now I’m working on a game that has a lot of music in it. I’d prefer to code with it in the background rather than listening to a different playlist. It sort of puts you into the mood.

As of right now the game has a dark, ambient, chiptune soundtrack, which I rarely see nowadays.

Does that mean you are using generative composition, a score synthesized on the fly? Or a midi-driven piece that uses wave-table based synthesis?
I’m slowly working towards being able to do this with FM synthesis (but could combine wavetable synthesis). Would be really cool to get some (what I call) “Ligeti” textures (orchestrally dense but used in an ambient way, creating suspenseful textures rather than discernible melodies/harmonies) that could be manipulated via an API. Or “Steve Reich” influenced (thinking “Music for 18 musicians” sort of layerings) controllable via an API.

Birds.

As in, real birds, outside.

Other than that I like silence.

I like to listen to Hardstyle while coding :stuck_out_tongue:

8-bit music.

Hell of a lot of Dubstep.

Ambient game music and tracks.

My family fighting over something.

I can’t tell if you’re trying to start a sob story to get medals or if you seriously need help.

I was joking. Haha Not trying to start anything.
