What does a graphic web designer do ?

Hi Everyone,
next week am going to join a web design agency under a trainee title, i know that the goal to be a trainee is to learn the job but i would like to have some ideas about what am i going to do exactly, obviously it’s going to be photoshop+illustrator to create graphical stuff, but is there any particular things i should be aware of ? you know ::slight_smile: to give a good impression 8)

PS :
is that correct ?? “Graphic Web Designer”, does such a name exist :stuck_out_tongue: ?

thank you

I know about Web designer.
It consitst mainly of customer support:

  • Find out what ideas the customer has
  • Find out what the customer really wants
  • Steer the customer to a good solution
  • Create a intuitive and easy to understand web design
  • Design the graphics / pages.
  • Create some technical requirements
  • Ship design to bulgaria / india and let them program your design.

so 90 % talking, 9% designing (1 to 0)% programming

A bit more, but from a somewhat different angle, mostly to do with the actual design stuff:
-Ensure that your webpages are user friendly
–Make sure that your design displays cleanly on different browsers/OSes (And note when it doesn’t)
–Make sure that your text is actually readable in the size it is.
–Make sure that you don’t have to search too hard to find the pages you need
-Ensure that your webpage is visually friendly
–Make sure that colour combinations are not painful on the eyes
–Make sure that images scale up/down alright and that there is no bad seaming

Like RobinB said 90% is talking. And beyond just talking to the customer, you’ll have to talk to people testing out the design and the like to make sure that it’s usable to people who aren’t you. This is especially true for the ‘Search too hard to find the pages’ part and then the ‘colour combinations’ one. I know that some things that look good to me end up looking hideous to others, and that if you do the design you fall into the “I already know what to do to find something, so I can easily find it, so it must be easy to find” trap.

Probably one of the more important things to have a grasp of for a “graphical web designer”, beyond your illustration tools, is CSS (cascading style sheets). It saves a lot of repetition, and in modern browsers you can get some pretty impressive effects by combining some of the more recent CSS attributes to different elements. If you’ll potentially be doing more than filling a graphic designer role, you will probably need to be familiar with basic (X)HTML and “tableless layouts”, some knowledge of SQL, and at least one scripting language such as PHP, ASP, Cold Fusion, or something similar.

Above all else, the most important trait to possess is flexibility. Between client whims and browser quirks, you’ll go crazy if you’re not able to adapt to changing situations and requirements. In some ways, (correctly) designing for the web is far more of a challenge than writing game code.

More likely layout work. It’s full of front end job so ya, lot of CSS3 and a cup of JS.

Actually it is more involved than what is sketched here. I could never properly do (web) design because it requires a certain “feeling” for it. Picking proper color compositions, applying proper shading, even spacing and the right (combination of) fonts can make and break a design. You need an artist’s eye to be able to properly do it, something which is highly undervalued nowadays.

The most fun I’ve had doing web development was working together with an experienced and capable designer, the things you create then go that “one step beyond” and actually become something Good.

thanx everyone ;D

If your mom understands it, you’re off to a good start.
