VIA APC 8750

Just saw that VIA are releasing a new Raspberry Pi style PC with the following spec:

CPU: VIA WonderMedia 8750 800 MHz ARM11 processor
RAM: 512MB of DDR3 memory
STORAGE: 2GB of flash storage
INPUT/OUPUT: HDMI, VGA, USB 2.0 (x4), Audio out / Mic in, microSD Slot
NETWORK: 10/100 Ethernet
SOFTWARE: Android 2.3

The chip supports 1080p HD video playback, H.264 video encoding, and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics (however seems like one chip for both GFXs and CPU).

And selling for a nice $49 (£30).

Looks really nice and as its more beefier than the PI it should run Java a lot better.

nice! - too bad about the arm11 choice :frowning:

720p says there. Also, apparantly no OpenGL ES 2.0. Also… what’s wrong with Arm11?

last generation - should have been cortex - preferably A15, MPCore

Still plenty powerful enough. Besides… it’s the GPU wot’s the issue with it. (Does ARM11 have hardware FPU?)

Yeh that is what the APC website says, however the chip looks like its a WM8750 (at least from the screenshots and from the name of the product), the spec listed here say it supports OpenGL ES 2.0 and 1080p decoding. Unless I’m mistaken and its a different chip or the website is lying :). Another possible reason could be because its running CPU/GPU on the same chip or because of Android 2.3 (which installing another linux distro could fix it).

The WM8750 according to Wikipedia here has an Arm Core ARM1176JZF (Like the Raspberry Pi) so should have a hardware FPU.
