URGENT: Free web hosting needed for my game

Hi,

my current web hosting provider allows me only 5 megs and I need more space but I’m pretty sure there’s a good free web provider out there for game hosting purposes.

I need at least 10 megs. 20 would be preferable.

Thanks for you help!

Here are the problems I’ve encountered so far with free web hosting in my researches:

  • you must provide private data such as complete street address, you age…
  • pure download from your web space is not allowed
  • cannot upload a file bigger than 1 meg (for example)
  • web ftp access only
  • too limited bandwith

and I’m sure I forgot important ones.

I assume you’ve been using something like MyJavaServer.com (formerly MyCGIServer) and have run into these problems? Just an FYI, MyJavaServer might be willing to up your quota if you can explain what you need the space for. Worst case, ask the same question on JavaLobby’s front page and you’ll get Rick Ross’s attention.

Other options are:

  1. Host the site on your own personal hardware and DSL line. This is a good solution if you’ve got a little extra hardware (e.g. an old Pentium) and fairly low traffic.

  2. Just pay for a service like Lunarpages. If your stuff is important enough, you can probably afford the $8 a month it costs.

  3. Beg someone to give you some web space on their hardware. I know Blah does that quite often. I myself do it on occasion for data I think is worthy. What exactly are you planning to host?

The problem with myjavaserver is that it’s sometime SO slow that it doesn’t give a good visibility/publicity of your game.

That’s a good idea but I don’t have extra hardware to do that.

MightyBubbles has grown in size because it has now sound (current distribution doesn’t work well) and music (NEW) but I need more space and a provider that is faster than myjavaserver to host these new features.

Of course if someone here is willing to give me that then I will be happy.

It’s really hard to respond without using the phrase “you get what you pay for”. Oops!

Generally, free webspace is supported by advertising revenue, so direct linking isn’t allowed; they only allow a single method of updating your site, to lower their maintenance costs; they limit bandwidth to stop your users seeing one advert but downloading hundreds of megs of data; and they require personal information in order to properly protect themselves against any litigation.

If you’re willing to pay a nominal fee, there are some very good hosting packages out there. My personal favourite at the moment is ITA Network Solutions, which comes out to £3 a month.

I already had the feeling of having this response but I had noting to loose.

3 euro? I guess it’s about 3 or 4 US dollars?

Hmm… that sounds like a good cause. Before I answer this, let me ask this to the other JGO users:

Does anyone else out there have games that they need proper hosting for? Please describe your specific situation and why you’d like to move. I might have a smidge of space and bandwidth I can helpfully donate.

So many thanks to jbanes for this Christmas present! MightyBubbles will have a new home soon with the new sound and music features.
