Unoffoical pointer to official listing

Hi Guys,

We in the Game Technolgoy Group are actually looking for someone to take over management of this community as a full time job.

Basic responsabilities are something like this:

(1) Administration of JGO and the JGO forums.
(2) Administration of the JGO projects
(3) Content management, creation and update for JGO
(4) Light developer support. (touchpoint for JGO to Sun)
(5) Community evanglism
(6) CoreAPI evnagelism
(7) tech support for community projects.

The listing isn’t a great job desctription (hiring listing is done through corporate which has a bit of a problem grokking what we do), but its here…

Damn, if only it was a few months later!

Kev

Well, keep an eye on it. No promises but we havent filled it yet.

Also, frankly, Sun takes a fair bit of time typically to complete the hiring process. You COULD submit a resume now with a cover letter that explains you aren’t available until the end of the year. The timing might work out fine.

This could be an ideal job for Kev.
I think Jeff’s advice sounds nice, too.
Good luck, Kev!

Sounds like a great job! Unfortunately I cannot relocate to the US, otherwise I’d apply immediately!!

Me too. In fact two years ago I’d have dropped everything and applied.

Cas

So what’ s the pay range for a position of that level?

Pay at Sun is based on how youa re “categorized” as an employe, not directly on the job you do.
Generally the more industry experience you have, and to some degree the higher your previous salery history, before you come to Sun the higher your initial categorization will be.

I came to Sun with 15 yrs experience. I wont mention my salery experience except to say I was at the higher end of game industry engineer saleries at that time. My classifaction initially was MTS4. (Member of Technical Staff 4). Because of the kind of work i did, a few years in I was mvoed up to Staff Engineer (the next level) and my salery went up significantly.

Beyond that Im afraid I ca’t tell you much. HR might be able to give you more guidelines.

Well, finally got round to applying…

I have a feeling Sun corporate policy will bounce me for maybe needing a visa one day tho

Thanks for the pointer tho Jeff,

Kev

My girlfriend is having the issue applying for jobs here in the US. The way I see it you and her are in the same boat, so I’ll say the same thing I say to her! I’ve seen the stuff you’ve done and if they don’t hire you only for that reason it’s their loss! It’s really frustrating! We are heading toward a true “World-Community” but companies are too lazy / stupid to keep up!

Well, who knows, there seems to be a fair few companies in the US who are happy to employ blokes from blighty as contractors at least.

I might even be able to stay in Software

Kev

well in my opinion kevglass is the idle man for the job, cant think of anyone else better or experianced to get this job.

Funniest…

quote…

ever…

Kev

whoops, sorry, i mean’t “ideal”, you are waiting for the job too right? ;D ;D ;D

Just curious, the postings still vacant ?

Hong Cheng

Seems to have gone now from the website at least.

Kev

sigh

The posting is more or less caught up in red tape.

Its supposed to be to offload the work I was doing with you guys on projects as well as have more active web site support.

Ofcourse while I was actually DOING the work, even though the deal was it was temporary, they did nothing to fill the position.

I’vr basically put my foot down and just dropped it on the floor. I apologize to you folks on that but i just DONT have the tiem anymore and the only way it will ever get handed off is if I just plain refuse to do it :frowning:

Anyway, I hear various half-baked plans flaoting around-- everywhere from really opening this position up again to gettign the desktop guys to do it.

so the short answer is, no its not filled, they may hire someone for it eventually, they may not. sigh

… Wow !?

Well, thanks for the honesty and the insight into what passes for upper management over there.
I have certainly appreciated your presence on the forums the last few months.
