Tower of the Deathmaster

A while ago I decided to learn how to load game dynamics from XML files. And pretty much this is what I managed to bang up with. First of all: I did NOT create the graphics nor the music. I only did the coding part.

The game isn’t finished and I haven’t implemented a title menu of some sort YET. The goal is to rescue the princess which isn’t implemented into the game. So the temporary goal is to reach floor 10 without getting stuck (trust me, you will get stuck ALOT).

And also, the co-ordinates on the top left corner and the ‘X’ you see when you move the mouse is there for debugging and level designing. So don’t stress about it.

You’ll engage in automatic combat with monsters if you walk into it (you’ll need to have sufficient HP and your attack must be higher than their defence). Alot of the controls is explained on the game page.

Please submit any bugs or issues. Play it here: http://jaypixstudios.tk/?page_id=61

I just had a go at this, went to floor 4 but I didn’t understand why I couldn’t attack some monsters. I run into them but nothing happened.

One thing that annoyed me is that when I changed floors I had to scan through the screen looking for my character. You should add something indicating where you just spawned.

Otherwise seems good, keep up!

The site is blocked for me (blocked by my antivirus) - “risky website”

I managed to reach level 6 of the tower. Here are a few things I’d like to mention:

  • You should add in an option to turn off the sound, I was watching a movie on the other screen and I had to pause it just to try this out.
  • Instead of saying “The enemy is too strong.” or something like that, just let the player try and fight the enemy.
  • When I was moving between the levels of the tower it always took me a good 5+ seconds to figure out where my character was.
  • There were way to many items on the screen in each level; Maybe you could get rid of some of them or make the monsters drop them?
  • I killed everything that I could, as far as I know, and I still never leveled up. (My exp was at 35 when I quit).
  • When I was looking around at the levels, I only glanced at them, it looked as if there were areas filled with monsters and that which you can’t get to.
  • It took me a minute to figure out the basic controls, maybe you could include a little area at the bottom of the webpage that could show the controls?

If you looked at the top of the screen (which is the verbose), you should be able to see some messages. Such as ‘XXX Monster is too strong!’ etc. That tells you why you can’t perform certain actions.

game only loaded once. When i got stuck and tried to play again, it never loaded. is there another place I could try this out? I like the concept and want to play some more.
EDIT: had to close browser and re open for it to load again.

Pretty much the same complaints as others, but I’ll list them out anyways:

  • hard to find your character each level
  • It should show how much stronger an enemy is so you know when you can go back and kill it
  • There should be a way to get stronger besides picking up the items. This would cut down on getting stuck, so you could get stronger then kill new monsters opening up more areas and keys

I also got to an exp of 35 and then I couldn’t progress any more. I had chosen to spend all my money on buying attack and still I couldn’t find a single monster I was allowed to fight. Other than that, I agree with everything anon951759 said

Seems like a really good game, but I think that smooth movement could really help, it would make the game feel more natural.
Other than that keep up the good work

So after a couple plays, I’ve determined that you can’t get to level 10 unless there’s something I don’t know. I had everything cleared out up to level 9, I had over 1000 atk and 250 ish defense and 10K health, but the only enemy left was the soul knight which has 3400 def. As far as I can tell, there’s no way to get that high of attack with what’s available. Even if I could kill the soul knight, I don’t see any way of going up to level 10 after he’s dead.

Other than that, I really liked the game. You really need to consider your options because each decision will affect how far you can get. The difficulty curve is kind of odd. The beginning is pretty hard because you don’t really know what your doing. Once you get the hang of the game, the curve continues how I would expect. But after a couple of floors, all of the enemies drop enough xp and gold to make the rest of the game pretty easy. Then the only enemy left is the soul knight which I don’t know how you could kill. The difficulty curve needs to be smoothed out a bit. I think it was floor 8 or 9 there were a bunch of gold coins in one room that made you pretty hard to kill once you spent them. That along with all of the gold/xp that the monsters in that room dropped.

Another little thing: I was getting tired of going back down to the stores to spend my gold/xp. Maybe once you shop at them once you can open them up where ever.

And it doesn’t really explain what it means when it says you can open a lava entrance (something like that when you rescue the dude). Unless this is for something later in the game that hasn’t been implemented yet. If it is used in this part of the game, more clues on how to use it would be nice because I have no idea what it’s for.

Ok first of all, for all of you guys who saw the game post back in December last year, it is the same game. Sorry for double-posting but I wish I could reply to that post instead of bringing up a new one (because it was too old of a post to reply).

However, for the new people, Tower of the Deathmaster is a clone from Tower of the Sorcerer, a Japanese 2D dungeon-crawler? tower-like game. Taken ideas and opinions from the last post, I’ve made the game significantly easier.

Download v0.5 here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/56343737/Games/tod_0.5.jar

Controls
[W, A, S, D or arrow keys] to move
[2, 8] moves cursor up and down in corresponding order when shopping
[SPACE] confirms your choice and/or dismisses dialogs
[L] to use the ability rod should you find it
[ESC] dismisses shops and ability rod interface

Gameplay
Everything is directly cloned off the original flash game, you have gold earned through killing mobs, experience gained through killing mobs. You can find a shop on a floor to purchase upgrades for your attack and defense and the process continues.

You must locate the staircases and fight towards it, as they will take you to a new floor with new monsters. The goal is to save the princess, which is not implemented.

You do NOT level up automatically (it is an option in the Level 6 EXP shop).
Currently you can play up to floor 10, and move down into floor -1. I’m also making new levels as we speak! The game won’t be too long, perhaps just 40 floors.

Don’t take it lightly! Any actions you do may end up in screwing up the game! If you’re stuck, you’ll have to start over. It is possible to get past floor 9, there is a ‘hidden staircase’ lurking in the walls. So get bumpin’

Updates

v0.5

  • Made the game significantly easier
  • Added a tile mask so you can see where the player is before screen gets cluttered by mobs

Got up to the soul levels after completing everything below ahemmultiplying health, attack and defense by 1000ahem, but they’re completely empty. Is this intended behaviour? Nice port, by the way.

Thanks, cheeky. Yeah soul levels and underground levels are currently being worked on. How did you manipulate the stats? I sure hope they are not too easy (It was ridiculously hard when I first made it)

Ah great, thanks a lot
Too bad I can’t access my old account anymore (Lost password for both my old email account and my JGO account) and edit the home post. Oh well, I’m hoping you guys know where to download it :stuck_out_tongue:

Let’s just say that your code is the first that’s been recompilable after I decompiled it… a while ago I found some JARs from one of my old projects so I decompiled it and it was littered with errors.

Sorry for the massively late reply, I’ve not been on JGO for months.
