Too many forums?

There are currently 32 forums categeories on these forums, and I believe it’s way too much considering most of those forums have a very limited activity.

And also, everytime I have to post a topic, I always have to look through the available categories and make sure I’m posting in the right one. But, in some cases I rather post in the more active forums rather than posting in the right forum, even though the topic isn’t entirely relative to that forum category.

I think the forum administrators need to simply these forum categories, like merging “java 3d”, “java jogl”, “java lwjgl” etc.

ps. on the forums I administer I follow a thumb-rule: If the topics in the forum (1st page) are spread over a period of MONTHS rather than days, then that forum is not very active and something needs to be done.

I think we’ve been through this cycle once before. Many people who read these forums are only interested in specific bits and hence don’t want to have to wade through a bunch of other stuff to try and pick out what they want. Thats the only reason its the way it is at the moment, because it suits the general populace (at least those who bothered to say anything last time the question was asked ;))

This is a recent phenomenon - they used to be a lot more active. Just wait for a bit, things will pick up.

Also, having to look for the best place to put something is good - maintains high SNR

Most people use that unread page. So, they’ll find it either way. However, if they decide to write an answer later its better if the post was in the right forum. Using the search function also works better if the right forum was choosen.

and if you would combine Java3D with lwjgl and jogl, you sure would have to add Xith3d and JMe, too. And that would be WAY too much!

Merging j3d, lwjgl and jogl wouldnt make any sense at all anyways. I so dont care about j3d and jogl (for example).

The games section ought to be collapsed again, possibly into a Feedback & Announcements topic, like on indiegamer.

Thats what I would like to see, too. The reason for the split up was to make it easier to search genre wise… well, I’m sorta unsure about how useful that actually is. We could for example put the genre into the title, which would work equally well if everyone would use the same genre-tags.
