Tiltilation

Just added a MacOSX bundle to my build, anyone on a Mac got time to test it?

Another native distributon, linux natives here ~ 7.5 meg. You’ll need GLIBC 2.3.4+

http://www.cokeandcode.com/tilt2000/Tiltilation-linux.tar.gz

Be interested to know if it works standalone on different distros.

Kev

Tested MacosX budle, working nicely getting 250fps ingame. Fun little game but pretty hard :P.
Spec.
G5 2Ghz dualcore
OS: 10.4.6
Ram 1.5GB

I can confirm that the linux native build works, including sound and controller.

Some quirks:

  1. After ending a level (either giving up or completing it) the level selection “cursor” is now shown. You have to use the mouse to select another level.
  2. In “Islands in the Air” I think there should be a more visible hint as to where the ball ends up after a teleport.
  3. The “New Dawn” logo is noisy in the edges (jpeg compression?).
  4. After I complete a level, selecting another will kick me back to the main menu. Restarting the game allows me to select another one.

Haven’t been able to reproduce 1 and 4 on my windows install. Could you try the latest webstart and let me know if these issues are still occuring.

Kev

I can’t reproduce 4 edither with the webstart version. Maybe gcj is pulling your leg? I can still reproduce 1, though. A more accurate description would be that with a gamepad I seem to be stuck on the “Back to menu” selection and can’t move out on the map to select another level. Hope that helps.

Ah, maybe the mouse cursor is over the back to menu area - the mouse currently takes precedence on menu screens.

Hmm, ok… I’ll take another look

Thanks,

Kev

Bunch of updates -

  • Optimisations - those that had the low end systems (<30fps) might get better results now
  • 5 more levels
  • A set of new visual effects
  • New level features
  • Native build confirmed on linux
  • Win32 installer
  • Bug fixes galore

Lots more still to go - what I haven’t done

  • Centering on the ball caused motion sickness with “non-gamers” I’ve tested with
  • Different background - artist tried some but everything seems to change the feel of the game alot
  • Moving background - this went in then got deleted - probably coming back some time soon
  • Not been able to reproduce a couple of the bugs (mostly gamepad related)

I’d be really interesting to know how low the specs can go before its unplayable (ok, more so than normal :))

Kev

The FPS is so much faster (not sure how much exactly, there’s no counter anymore). The text on top of the screen is not visible (or slightly but not readable) - I forgot to mention that the last time I posted.

You’re on an 800x600 screen resolution though right?

Kev

Yes, sir!

New Version! Few more levels, some more performance fixes. Binaries for different platforms updated along with the webstart this time.

Kev

Great as always…

Those bridges are dam hard, nice idea tho

The webstart version runs like a charm here (XP, JVM 1.5, 6600GT), it looks real sleek with anti-aliasing enabled!

Im desperatly waiting for more easy levels though  Couldn’t finish any level without it telling me to go faster next time >:(

It really is one of those learning curve things. I started off trying to zip around and had no luck at all. Next I tried going really slowly and carefully . This worked a charm for me but there was no way I was going to get any stars. After 15-20 levels of crawling around levels, I came across one that you literally HAD to try to burn your way through. Next thing I know, I`m actually quite average at all the levels

thanks Kev

New version available! - with the real levels, tailored so there should be a better difficulty curve. Registration/Highscores has also been added but not quite ready to deal with that yet

You can find the new version of the game at the new location of:

http://www.tiltilation.com

I’m now working to produce all the other levels I need for the proper release.

Feedback appreciated,

Kev

Hey Kev, I just finished all levels and it’s pretty fun.

About the levels that are only available in the purchased version, it’s good to load them, but make them unplayable: no mouse-handling, translucent overlay saying the level not available in the demo. This way the player knows that he’ll be paying for, now it’s one big mystery what the next levels will be, so players will ask themselves whether it’s worth it or not.

My second point would be to enable FSAA by default - are you using LWJGL? Use the Display.create(…) to get FSAA - and fall back on the default create() when an exception is thrown. This game desperately needs AA and it’s only a few lines of code.

Last but not least, the register-menu crashes in about a 10th of a second.

Great game Kev, your best yet. I’ve been playing it quite a bit. The gameplay seems just about right - challenging but not too difficult.

I didn’t actually find these levels much easier than the previous lot. The old ones seemed to have one idea per level and did it well, but these seem a bit busier, there is more stuff in them. For example you’ve put extra electric gates in Eat Me.

A few other things I noticed:
The game exits unexpectedly when I click on Register - I see the registration screen for about a second, and then it’s gone.
“Unavailable in demo” isn’t spelled correctly.
The rollover areas don’t quite correspond to the graphics - noticeable on the main menu and on the + and - buttons in the settings screens.

Great !

Comments :

  • Nice smooooth loading bar, and smooth transitions, too, very pleasant
  • The view destabilize me a bit : I think It’d be better if it was rotated 45° in the X axis (perspective more visible)
