Hi
Quite amusing, I wonder what their kids will think of splinter cell and GTA 3, ‘what?, it’s ona a screen, no holgrams?’, or ‘whats this ke.y.b.o.a.r.d. thing, can’t I plug in direct?’

In the future, there are no games. Or rather everything is a game… learning/training, business, socialization, gov’t.
It’s all on the Grid - computing.

I did not find it amusing at all.
It made me want to cry. :’(

It was kinda interesting. Thanks for the link

EGM did a poor job with the story though. A lot of those games were just not good selections: Pong? Mattel Football? ET? Space Invaders? Q-Bert? You almost couldn’t pay me to play those games today. I would have passed all of them up for better games back in the day.

But Tempest, Ghosts n Goblins, Frogger, Vector Star Wars, Zaxxon, etc. Now those are games that IMO remain very playable to this day, I hold dear to me for nostalgic and gameplay reasons, and the kids would have still hated them. But then at least there’s a good tension going there (which is what EGM was shooting for). You hate Pong? Wow, so do I. Next. I also think the kids would have had some interesting comments on vector games, particularly 3D ones.

I think it was a very good selection of games because they were all extremely popular (except ET) and trendsetting. It’s true that Space Invaders caused a coin shortage you know…

isnt super mario bros a nintendo game? there are some little kids that i know who would enjoy playing that.

that almost sounds a bit setup… some of the words that those 9 - 12 year olds used were a bit beyond what i would imagine a game playing kid would say.

It’s still a poor article. They were trying for the classic generations misunderstanding each other and missed the mark because the generations are agreeing with each other! Young kids hate Pong. Wow. So do most (all?) 20 and 30 something gamers today. Did we really expect them to like Pong? So where’s the tension? There is none. The same thing applies to almost all the other games they chose.

I think it’s still amusing just as an observation of how times change. Of course Space Invaders and Pong isn’t really played anymore. I also wouldn’t buy a T-Ford these days if it were available, but back then it was a great car.

No, mate, you missed the mark  THey aren’t trying to demonstrate a difference of current opinions, but a difference in how we reacted then and how those kids react now. Back then, we thought Space Invaders was the greatest thing ever. And how many hours did people sit and move those two paddles back and forth?

Imagine if you take a few 30-somethings and force them to live somewhere with an outhouse for a month. I’m sure they and their grandparents would agree that outhouses suck compared to modern toilets, but the grandparents didn’t know what they were missing as kids.

Speaking of the youth of today, how old is everyone here?
