JGO is kinda locked down at the moment, and for a reason. I’m quite paranoid about getting hacked again, so as long as JGO is running on the current server, it will remain this way, as this server has/had more stuff running on it, like a bunch of mailboxes that people depend on. I’d rather not lose them again.
Present
Having said that, there are concrete plans to move JGO to a brand new (virtual) server in London that should have comparable (awesome) performance for both Europe and the USA.
There is one problem though: those fancy webhosters at Linode only accept creditcards, and unlike in the USA, in Europe the creditcard is not really that common, so I had to request one from the bank, which was a whole procedure. I’m half way through it and will receive my creditcard either this week or a bit later. $.$
Near future
Once I migrated JGO to a nice Linode box, we can finally move ahead with JGO’s functionality. Yes, I bet I could use some help from people here that know a thing or two about serverside security and maintenance, which are willing to commit a fair chunk of time to ensure the continuation of JGO. First thing will be giving our banhammers their moderation powers back. Among other things, any new serverside code added to JGO will most likely be Java and will be subject to peer review (prepared statements mandatory). Soon we will have picture-of-the-day, demo-of-the-week, multiple halls of fame for those that thrive on attention. Some nice award system which will replace the current appreciation++ and maybe some of the coding contests baked right into JGO. We’ll see.
All of the above will have to be manually enabled, per feature, by the visitor, as the core of JGO should be lean and mean.
Far future
Over time it will become clear who is seriously dedicated to adding new features, monitoring security and ongoing maintenance of JGO. I will share root access to the server allowing multiple people to take action in an emergency. We’ll see how JGO will gain in features, trying to make the most of it, until the world will end in December 2012.
Feedback
As always: highly appreciated.
