The official iPad Discussion!

Anyone know if the iPad supports Java? I doubt it though? ???

Doomed IMO

It’s a giant iPhone, so I heavily doubt it will ever officially support Java.

I really like it. I’d love to have something like that as my ultra portable device that I can comfortably slip out whilst walking along and chatting with friends. I think it would be perfect for surfing a little internet, checking mail and watching a bit of tv out and about. But it’s waaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive.

Nah, Ipod never supported Java so I doubt this does either. Maybe though with Oracle taking over, they(Oracle) will get JavaFX in shape, and maybe wooh over Apple.

I wonder if it supports Flash or Flash mobile. I suppose so. Apple would be pretty stupid not to support Flash on something like this.

–Edit–I just read an article on Yahoo about the IPad. Nope no Flash. I wonder what Apple is thinking. Like people won’t want to play their internet Flash games on it?

I think it has mouse-envy. :o

I think it’s a piece of crap and a waste of money. Just a bigger iPhone. Totally stupid.

But that won’t stop me from making games for it.

1024x768 - non widescren, sub-hd on a 9.7" - 'nuff said :persecutioncomplex:

The only use I’ve seen of Tablets is signing for parcels when delivered by courier. Also seen in supermarket inventory checking. But this is hardly going to fit in anyones pocket and is more expensive and less versatile than a laptop. If it doesn’t run flash, then its not much use for casual internet use. I just can’t see the need for this - have apple mis-stepped?

Personally, I haven’t got much use for one. I need portable ms office applications, web/email that works (i.e. with flash at least). For my own gratification, I want to be able to program on it.

I allways wanted a tablet PC (a true Tablet PC) for a fair price.
For the start, I known I didn’t want that iPad. But now, I can hope to see a EeePad

For the iPad : no java… well not surprissing… no flash ! ???
I have heard that the CPU power of the iPad is not that mush more than one of the iPhone… for this price :-\

ps : if you know a cheap A5 format tablet PC ;D

i am actually on One right now but I don’t know the cost

Disappointed - I was hoping for a proper Apple tablet (ie. an official modbook) since my windows slate is getting a bit slow these days. But proper keyboard-less wacom tablets are really scarce.

I don’t know why any guy would want one: http://www.break.com/index/ipad14.html

Utter rubbish product. Hopefully will be killed off by Android versions of same idea.

Cas

It’s begining : ExoPC slate

GWT will probably be the only Java route. The bonus being it will work on all other tablet PC that are brought to market.

Personally I won’t be buying an iPad, the no forward facing camera killed it for me.

Wow, it really is just repackaged netbook hardware!

Almost everything is identical to the hardware in my Acer Aspire One 150.
Same processor, gpu, display size, display resolution, etc.
Hell even the wireless & ethernet chips are the same manufacturers! (3DSP & JMicron)

The only difference I can see is that the webcam is better, and it has the full 2gb of ram.

Though I think they might have their tech sheet wrong.
They say the processor is an N270, yet they claim the memory is clocked @667MHz. I don’t think that’s possible.

The N270 has an FSB of 533MHz (I doubt it supports unlinked memory).
It’s the N280 that has an FSB of 667MHz.

Either they’ve got their cpu model wrong, or they’ve misrepresented the memory speed.
Perhaps they mean the memory is 667MHz SO DIMM’s, but is running at only 533MHz.

I would have hoped the manufacturers would have learn by now that going with a 1024x600 screen is a mistake - many programs expect a vertical resolution of atleast 768 pixels.
They got it wrong on the initial 8.9" netbooks. They repeated the error on the 2nd generation 10.1" netbooks. Now they’re doing the same on the new generation of tablets… Gah!
It’s like they’ve never had users test out their products! >:(

Unfortunately, that seems to be one thing that Apple has got right with the ipad… it’s res. is 1024x768.
Though it being crippled in other ways won’t do it any favours.

Where are all the lovely widescreen HD-ready tablets!
I was expecting entry level res. to be 1280x768 or 1366x768 :frowning:

I’m sure it won’t support Java, but will probably be a big success.

There’s an awful lot of people out there with money, who couldn’t care less if it will run Java or even flash. They don’t care if they can use office on it and certainly have no interest in programming on it. If it will sit comfortably in your lap while you’re on the sofa or in bed, and you can check email and browse the web then great. Something you can pick up and easily show photos to people on. Maybe play some Sudoku if you really want to branch out. All without having to boot up, use a mouse or worry about your operating system.

Once cell phones were associated with business people, then they took over the world and gained features for the masses. There is now a huge body of people who want to use a few computer/internet functions in a very convenient way, but have no interest whatsoever in any of the others.

Yes it’s pretty much just a big iPhone. A massive TV is just a bigger version of my laptop screen but I don’t stand that in the front room.
It is too expensive - but that doesn’t invalidate the concept, and can change.
