The Best Game Evar 2: F**kwad's Revenge

This game is probably dead and no longer in development.

Yes, the name is what you read, and will not be censored anywhere where I am not forced to.

The Best Game Evar 2, or BGE2 for short, is an SNES-style top-down RPG. It has been in development for a year and has no planned release date at this time. We have two programmers on the project: Demonpants and CBWolf, one artist: 177onte, and four level designers: Demonpants, CBWolf, Draque, and kapta. We have a couple possible people for SFX, and a couple possibles for music.

Features:
– TBE2 is not a sequel, there is no TBE1.
– The game is meant to be a farce and a parody on all RPGs ever made, and is thus very cynical and designed to be hilarious.
– Includes an innovative class system never seen before, based around different combinations of the three base beings: The Ninja, Zombie, and Pirate, because everything in the world is a certain percentage of each.
– Has the unique ability to kill absolutely anyone or anything, and have absolutely anyone or anything join your party.
– Incredibly customizable: the entire game is created using a map editor called FkMaker which is provided with the game. Therefore anyone has the power to make their own levels or scenarios, and because FkMaker has its own scripting language that can access almost any method in the game you can make your own mini-games or special events.
– All images and sounds are accessed from an external folder and can be easily replaced, modified, or added to so that you can change up the provided game or further customize your own.
– A longer-than-average quest is possible because of the ease in making levels.
– A unique combat system that includes dynamic timing between player combat and a new stat system more dynamic than most.

Screenshots & Website
We are still in the process of coding and so have been using random SNES sprites to test things out. There is nothing to present at this point. We also do not have a website up for the game yet, as there is no media content to present.

Want to help?
One of the main reasons I am posting this now is because this project needs help. In terms of coders, we are all set, but we can still use people for pretty much every other job, if they want to join in and help.
–Artists – We really need some good artists to draw the game. We are unsure as to whether we will use 3D-turned-2D or have actual frame by frame art. This largely depends on whether or not anyone will help. It would be great to have someone to draw… well… everything. Logos, enviroments, characters, weaponry, etc. etc. If you like to draw and want an amusing outlet, look us up. Don’t be worried about rush on completion or anything like that, either.
–Musicians – I can always whip up a bit of techno or whatever for the background music, but I am not particularly talented and having someone who wants to showcase their skills would be greatly appreciated. We’ll need background music in many different places, as well as menu loops and the like.
–SFX Artists – Like music, I can make fun little homemade effects, but having someone who is good at this kind of thing would be great. Weapons clashing, coins clinking, wolves howling – the works. If you think this would be a fun activity, go ahead and contact me.
–Level Designers – This is what I really think we’ll gain from making this post here. We’re going to need people who have at least a bit of programming knowhow and who think they can design fun block puzzles, interesting mazes, and diverse towns. Level Designers will use FkMaker to create the levels used in the game. Anybody who just wants a fun little project to do has the outlet right here. Simply making one house would be a great addition, and with FkMaker it will take practically no time at all. And because F**kMaker has such diverse control over your levels, you could even put yourself inside the house and paste your face in as your conversation icon. Make a sprite for your computer and you can even have that spot on your keyboard within the house you designed. I really hope people will be interested in adding just a little bit to level design, as we want it all to be as diverse and fun as possible.

Demonpants:
Currently Working On: Fog of War + 3D windows
CBWolf
Currently Working On: Combat System

Update!
– Converted to OpenGL using LWJGL! A speed increase of 600%! Smoother animation! Image splitting! Hooray! Text fixed!
– Combat is undergoing steady progression, almost at a demoable level.
– Fog of War works on a very primitive level
– 3D Window class created, 3D DialogueWindow subclass created, ItemWindow and JobWindow must be converted to 3D still
– kapta given the beta LevelBuilder (F**kMaker) for creating custom levels!

I plan on updating this periodically until we make a website. I figure this is a good place to put it until then.

A few notes:
BGE2 is currently made in OpenGL with LWJGL. We don’t need or want any more coders. We’re making it at our own sweet pace.

Sounds awesome - good luck with it, and do post when you guys are ready for public beta!

It should be really nice to actualy SEE something of your current progress. It means a lot to us others to get our impression. We all understand that it’s not polished yet, but anyway… When I see screenshot or two, read how you did something and so on, it helps to remember project a lot.
Anyway, good luck. I found LWJGL excellent, too.

yeh have to say does sound good, can’t wait to try what you come you with!

p.s. why the strange title?

Well, there are so many RPGs out there, and they all follow the same formula and are relatively boring (in my opinion). Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of RPGs, but 99% of them lack creativity and suck, especially most of the ones made by hobbiest developers like me.

So, me and my brother (Demonpants and CBWolf) decided last summer to make an RPG satire. Video games are so overripe for cynical games and there are so few of them it surprises me. In movies, there are massive amounts of parody, in books as well, and in art even. But video games are more or less lacking in that area. The only things that come to my mind right now are Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Boogerman, which were hilarious games. But never have I seen a satire on the o-so-easily targeted RPGs. We’re using this website: http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html for a lot of inspiration (it’s a list of RPG clichés).

The game will be far from serious, and will purposefully try to piss people off sometimes. We’re also trying to put every single one of those cliches in there somewhere. The title of the game itself is a cliche. The first game may have been called, Mystical Phalanx 1: Suri’s Adventure, fitting the very very comen colon producing name pattern. The second game being, Mystical Phalanx 2: Suri’s Revenge, if he got defeated or his woman got taken or something similarly stupid. Some real world examples are: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within, or any number of other games with sequels. Stealing a page from Liesure Suit Larry, we decided it would be funny to skip a number.

While I’m here, I can hint you in a little bit on the general storyline. Pretty much it makes fun of Scientology. http://www.holysmoke.org/cos/xenu-space-aliens.htm That link shows how the world “origninated,” more or less in their beliefs. Part of it involves throwing 54 different races into a volcano. We have 54 character classes. Get the picture? Pretty much you need to stop Xenu and stop something as retarded as scientoloogy from ever existing. Hilarity ensues.

Screenshots! So I decided to take a few screens today, and show a little bit of conept art. Even though we don’t have anything on a pretty level… I figured I would.

A bunch of clones are chasing me! If you look closely at the event script screenshot you’ll see how this is done.

Your engine is obviously growing! That’s good… I think that you are in good way to make something out of it, because you have an level editor, door linker etc. Of course, you have to improve visual impression.

Comin along… I love that 3d model, can’t wait to see it in the game!

looks awsom.
as a programmer, have you any programming education high education?? or just what you learned in school and on the internet??
just wanted to know because i plan on doing a program designer degree - i am 17 years old.

I have no “higher education” in CS, and neither does my brother who does the minority of the coding for the project. I took a year-long java class senior year in high school, took a semester long java class in college, and have since taken some C++, C, Pascal, Assembly, and Python classes.

All 3D, game programming, LWJGL, sound, etc. I learned on my own. I just have gained good programming practices and general knowledge of Java from my classes.

Admittedly, I regret I haven’t taken a class on 3D or game programming specific classes. The things I know are usually only partial knowledge of the subject – it’s really impossible to be able to see the whole story by reading books and tutorials, or looking at sample code. Being in a class is definitely the best option for learning the most you can learn. You get what you pay for.

While I’m here, a little update:
I have reached a point of creative stagnation… basically I dread working on the project at the moment. Pause menus and fog of war are boring. In the past month I have not dedicated that much time to the project, and, like the never-finishes-games person that I am, I’ve started thinking, “Hey, so-and-so project would be fun to make.”

BUT. I have spent way too much time on this project to let it die, so it definitely won’t. When this semester at school is over and I have a little more free time I plan on slaving away to get some things done.

Also, we have a website paid for, and are slowly getting that underway as well. Soon you’ll be able to see a plethora of screenshots and game information, all in a nicely locatable place.
